I sent a post to your blog page, but am not sure if it went through, so I thought I would
just email you directly. First off, are you part of The Mattress Experts stores in DE? I
purchased my Simmons NxG 400 mattress from the Wilmington, DE store in January of 2011.
So here is our dilemma. My husband is 6', 250 lbs and likes a firm mattress, I am 5'4",
120 lbs and like a soft feel (that feeling of luxury.) After previously owning TWO top of
the line Simmons Beautyrest (pillow top w/ memory foam, first one was replaced under
warranty for more than 1" divot, the second one lasted about 2 yrs, same divot issues on
his side of the bed), we began our hunt for a new mattress. I stumbled across your blog/site
over two years ago which I believe is how I ended up purchasing from the DE store. Lawrence
in the Wilmington store spent weeks helping me decide on the best mattress. My husband
and I spent weeks going into local mattress stores laying on beds and trying to decide
between the NxG, the Beautyrest Black and a Simmons Comforpedic. All of them felt
supportive and firm enough for my husband, yet soft enough for my liking. Unfortunately
we fell into the memory foam trap yet again, thinking this NxG would be better because of
the combination coil/memory foam system. Within a year my husband started complaining
of back, hip and shoulder pain, but was hesitant to blame it on the mattress, so here we
are another year later and he has declared mattress war!
Hindsight is 20/20, maybe I should have chosen the NxG 250, but I was convinced the 400
felt firm enough and would be a good compromise.
So now after reading your blog yet again, I see a common theme of the Beautyrest Black
Ansleigh Luxury Firm with a latex topper for cushion, or an all latex mattress. What do you
recommend for our situation for us both to be comfortable and happy? Is there much
difference in the "feel" of the innerspring with a latex topper, vs. the all latex mattress.
What are the pros/cons of each?
One thing I notice about the NxG is I get hot sleeping on it. Will the latex have the same
Thank you for any assistance you can offer in this grueling decision!
We had been affiliated with The Mattress Experts in Delaware. Their BBB rating dropped,
due to poor customer satisfaction, so we are now affiliated with Home Mattress Center,
also of Delaware. They have an A rating with the BBB.
While there is still one TME store left, the others have changed to Sealy Gallery Stores.
Come to find out, they have changed their stores' name several times over the years.
The 250 would have been a better choice for a big man. But then, it didn't have that
He can join me in that war, which I have been waging with the mattress industry for
10 years now...ever since mattresses went one sided.
Latex is the big gun in this war. Since the inception of the modern day mattress, back
in the 1920s, latex was the best material available. However, innerspring mattresses
with cotton and horse hair were much cheaper to produce and lasted a long time.
Only recently, in the face of overly priced mattresses using memory foam, has latex
emerged to take its rightful place as "best choice" and "best buy".
The latex topper is playing a huge role in providing that luxurious feel you talked
about...luxury that does not fail, but lasts for many years.
The combination of a strong, firm innerspring with a latex topper can be had at a
reasonable price, while all-latex mattresses are a little pricey...although, often less costly
than many of these junk memory foam mattresses, where you're paying for the
advertising hype that sells them.
My wife and I have an Ansleigh with the latex topper and we are both, large people. It's
extremely comfortable and we've had it since October, showing no signs of wear....which
is mostly attributed to the 2" soft Talalay latex topper.
We also have an all latex mattress that we just bought for the spare room. It too, is
