Hi Peter,
We came across your blog last week, thanks for your helpful advice to all. The wife and I are looking for our first new mattress since 2001 (a Serta Perfect Sleeper, flippable, that worked out fine). We want to stay with a Cal King, as the size fits well in our room and we have all the accessories. We are both approximately the same size ~5'8" and I come in at 165 while she got me by about 10 lbs. I am a side sleeper who if anything has slight neck & shoulder pain in morning. She is back sleeper, but has been on side lately due to regular low back pain. Whatever mattress we purchase, we want to love it and not think about another mattress purchase again for another decade plus. We seem to be focused on a Stearns & Foster, but would love a less expensive alternative. We visited Ortho Mattress for 4th July sale and they have a S&F Swiss Mountainside or an Italian Villa both at $2700 once they take 50% off. We also saw a very similar one at Sears called a Chasity for $2170 once they reduce it by 50% and then by another 10%. We focused on these because they appear to have latex and not memory foam and are sans the pillowtop. Also, by reading your blog we believe we should err on the side of firm, as we have seen your answers. Our questions 1) are these the same mattress (same enough) that we can save the $ from Sears, or is the one at Ortho a better mattress?, 2) what is your recommendation regarding level of firmness we should purchase?, 3) what would you recommend from your inventory? and 4) if we wanted to only spend half of the Stearns & Foster price, what alternative do you recommend? Thanks in advance for your time and efforts even if we do not receive a reply.
Hi Joe,
Of the latex mattresses, the Italian Garden Villa is the better of the two. We have that in king at $2709 every day of the year. The 50% off sale is, obviously, a phoney discount.
In fact, my wife and I have an older version of this same model at home. It's no less than a great mattress.
With free delivery and no sales tax, including a frame, mattress protector and sheet set, the price can't be beat.
The one at Sears is an innerspring mattress with only .79" of latex in it. Of there regular line models, this one is the best.
A lesser expensive solutioin is a more basic, firm mattress with a 2" layer of latex added to it.
A good example is the S&F Heidi in luxury firm, with the topper.
