My husband and I just bought a new mattress after struggling through one of the luxury pillow top nightmares you describe. Our old mattress quickly developed deep indentations as the pillowtop degraded. After 8 years we finally replaced it.
What wasn't as obvious when we shopped for our replacement was just how different our sleep needs are. We chose a Stearns and Foster Firm mattress (with damask design on top). He LOVES it - I absolutely cannot sleep without waking up all night in pain. My hips are killing me. My shoulder falls asleep. I am a side sleeper. He sleeps on his back, stomach and side. He weighs 180 lbs. I weigh 140 lbs.
I am not able to find any mattresses that offer plush on one side and firm on the other. I simply cannot sleep on this mattress. If we purchase the latex mattress topper my fear is that it will be hot - and too soft for him. And I am also concerned it will shift.
We have contemplated getting 2 separate Twin long mattresses (we have a King size bed with separate box springs) - but I am not sure how to keep them from separating and we believe the space in the middle will be uncomfortable.
We have only about 7 more days to return the mattress we are on now. Can you help? What mattress would you recommend?
Latex doesn't sleep hot, it doesn't shift, and can be ordered in soft, medium or firm.
Two twin XL toppers, one soft for you and one medium for him is your best solution, as they will also add longevity to the life of your mattress.
