Hi!
We're looking to replace our 10 yr-old Stearns & Foster Dovenby mattress. (It's a dual sided pillow top made in 2002. We don't know what it's firmness rating is). While my wife is happy with this mattress, I haven't been sleeping well on it for several years, finding myself tossing and turning all night long and usually waking with lower pack pain. I travel frequently and find that when I stay in decent hotels (like Marriotts) I sleep MUCH better in their beds. I am 6'2", weight 300+ lbs and usually sleep on my side but sometimes on my back. My wife is 5'8",average weight, and normally sleeps on her back but sometimes on her side.
Can you first tell me what the firmness level of our current mattress is/was? And then can you recommend a suitable mattress type and brand that will give me the support I need for my back but also with comfort to keep from creating pressure points that cause tossing and turning? Or should I maybe looking at a mattress and latex topper combination?
Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hi Buddy,
If you have a dual comfort mattress, one side was firm(ish) and the other side was softer.
The best value is a mattress firm enough and strong enough to hold up to your size. The one you have, you could flip. You can't do that with most mattresses today.
Add 2" of soft latex to the top and you'll have what you're looking for.
The Simmons Black Bray is the strongest innerspring, commercially made mattress available. Here are the links to that and the latex foam mattress toppers.
