Multiple needs mattress

Looking to purchase a queen size mattress for a guest room, that obviously will need to accomodate guests of different heights, weights, sleep positions, comfort preferences. Which is a comfortable "general purpose" mattress that would give us years of non-sagging use? Would either of these 2 fit the bill: Sealy Posturepedic Waterbrook vs. a Sealy Posturepedic Oak Crest? Our concern about the Waterbrook is that in 30-40% of the on-line reviews we read, the consumers complained about an awful chemical smell that did not dissipate over time.
Finally, our own queen mattress is a Sealy Posturepedic Fenway Ultra Plush. My husband is 6', 210 lbs., I'm 5'5", 125 lbs. He has intermittent back problems from an old strain injury, I do not. We both sleep mostly on our sides, occasionally on our backs. Though we find it comfortable, is it the "right" mattress for us? Thank you!

Posturepedics, in general, are a good choice for a spare room....the mattress used in most hotels. Since you're going to have to accommodate a variety of tastes, it doesn't make sense to get an ultre plush. It makes more sense to get a cushion firm...and have a topper on hand to use for those who want a softer feel.

Looking to replace our Select Comfort mattress

My husband and I could never get comfortable on our old Serta Perfect Sleeper pillow top cal king which had indentations that formed in the pillow top. He thought the bed was too firm as well. We both have arthritis. He has shoulder pain and my hips hurt. He rolls around a lot and I wake up all night with his bed motion and pulling the top sheet, etc. He's 5'10, 190lbs; I'm 5'8 135lbs. We liked the feel of the "Select Comfort" air bed in the showroom, but since we couldn't afford the king, we purchased a queen. We thought since we would be sleeping on separate air chambers, I wouldn't feel him move around so much. But for the 3 years we've owned it, we bump into each other all night, he rolls over and flops over onto my side constantly. One problem the SC system has with using separate firmnesses on the smaller bed, one side sinks and the person on the more firm side rolls down into the less firm side. SC sent us a foam liner which fits under my husband's side of the bed. It solved the dipping, but we just don't fit on the smaller bed.
We are both more comfortable and sleep much better when we visit a friend who has a split king adjustable bed in the guest room. Sleeping on the two separate twins is wonderful and we don't care about the adjustable part. We're thinking about looking for high quality twin beds and placing them on a king frame. We've read about latex and latex toppers and need advice on what would be the best quality and style for us, within a reasonable price range (under $2,000, if possible.)

If going with latex, you wouldn't need two twins. Latex transfers less motion and since it is better with pressure point relief, than anything else you've mentioned having, he won't toss and turn as much. It's the best you can do for that amount of money. We have a king Sealy SpringFree Beachside at home and don't feel one another get out or in.

Mattress Names

I just tried out some mattresses and wrote down all the information I needed on the ones that I liked so I could price compare and I can't find the name of the mattress (ie: Stearn & Foster "Rosalie" plush pillowtop)on any website, not even the store's website. The man said that this was one of the most popular so I figured I could find it at Sears and other places. How can I find the mattress that I am looking for on the internet? Is there a item number to look for on the mattress to help me identify that it is the one that I am looking for?

Rosalie is an old Sears name for an older, discontinued model. It's likely that the store is selling close-outs. Make sure you're getting a freshly made mattress. Otherwise, you're probably looking at a factory return...a defective product with no factory warranty.

Replacing a waterbed mattress

We have a waterbed and frame that we like (tons of storage and bookcase headboard). We would like to do away with the waterbed mattress and purchase a regular mattress. Is this feasible? The mattress would have to be a cal-king.

Hi Argela,
Just about any mattress can be had in that size....and will work in that frame.
What you will find is that with an 8" side board, getting sheets on and off is going to be difficult. Since the side board no longer has to hold a water mattress, cut it down to an inch or two. That will be enough to hold the mattress in place and make it easier to dress the bed.

Stearns & Foster king pillowtop mattress

Hi, I am in the market for a Stearns and Foster king mattress. I found one that I liked today called the "Farnesworth". The model I like is firm with a pillow top. It contains latex instead of memory foam. My husband has a lot of back problems (herniated disc & Spinal Stenosis). I like a little cushion for my hips because I sleep on my side. I am 5'5" and 135 while my husband is 6'1" and 170. I am hoping this will be a good model for us. Do you know anything about this model and, if so, do you think it is a good match for us? I am confused because I assumed firm with a pillow top is better than plush with a pillow top for someone with back problems. I just came from another store where I was told the plushness of the pillowtop has no effect on the back. They advised me to buy plush if I am a side sleeper and firm if I am a back sleeper. It seems the more I research, the more confused I become.

Pillowtops are a problem waiting to happen...firm or plush. All of the S&F models are available as a luxury firm and a luxury plush...with and without a pillowtop.
If you are both side sleepers, the luxury plush will do nicely. If your husband is a back sleeper, the luxury firm will be necessary. The soft poly foam on top, very much, makes a difference to a back sleeper...especially as it wears. (Pillowtops wear faster).
Better to soften the surface with a separate topper that can easily be replaced....as opposed to having to buy a new mattress every couple of years.

Replacing a 20 year old mattress

Hi, My current mattress is about 20 years old. It's firm, and was probably fine when I bought it. Now I toss and turn, wake up a lot, and have pain in my upper arm when I wake up. I've also had hip pain. I'm 5'4", 150lbs, and a side sleeper. I've been wanting a new mattress for years, but am terrified of buying the wrong thing. Though almost anything would be better than what I have.
I'm trying to decide whether to go with a mattress like the Sealy Signature Quaker Lane Ultra Plush, or spend the money for a latex one like the Sealy Spring Free Rivercrest Ultra Plush. But I'm wondering if I'm going to the other extreme and either of these would be too soft and I'd get lower back pain (which I've had before, not caused by a mattress). Maybe I should go with the Beachside, because it's a bit less soft? Could you say a few words on the pros/cons of these 3 mattresses? Thanks.

Hi Nancy,
Your inner voice has spoken. Use the common sense you are displaying and avoid going to the other extreme. If the ultra plush is too soft...which is likely to be the case, you're then just stuck. If the Beachside isn't as soft as you want it, you can always add a topper and make it feel anyway your heart...hips...shoulder...upper arm, desires.

Need a good mattress

The ones that are easier to shop will be more competitively priced....the name brands. Off brands are pushed because profit margins and commissions are higher.
The 2 things you know you like are the same 2 things that get the most complaints...so you might want to rethink that.
The Sealy Posturepedic Reserve is the best for the money you have to spend.

Specificity is a matter of, process of elimination.
Major problems reported from everywhere in the US about memory foam and pillowtops. Those two products represent the majority of complaints. Since you want what you buy to hold up and be comfortable for more than a few months, you can eliminate those.
Interlocked coil systems provide a more rigid support. And while they may be a good choice for many, they also provide the pressure points you seeks to avoid.
That leaves you with individually pocketed coils, or foam. Latex is the king of foams and has proven itself to be the most durable material available...for the past 80 years. Memory foam made the scene 17 years ago and would have completely died off by now, (due to extremely poor performance), had it not been for the mass media advertising that keeps it afloat.
Most people find that they get their best night's sleep in something that provides a more medium feel...a little firmer or softer to taste. The major mistakes occur when you go to extremes...too firm or too soft.
I hate to disappoint you there, Snoopy, but we don't choose for you. You now have eliminated enough beds to narrow your choices. The middle of the line is usually your best value. Name brands that you can shop are usually more competitively priced than off brands. Large mattress chains that spend a ton of money to convince you that they have the best price, are usually the highest priced.
From this point, it's a question of personal comfort.

Memory Foam Mattress

I recently purchased a Memory Foam Mattress from a dealer on Ebay and slept like a rock for the first couple of days. Now however, I've been waking up with a stiff neck and substantial shoulder soreness. It's been about a month. It's a 10 inch memory foam mattress which means it 7 inches of foam and 3 inches of memory foam. I think it may be getting an indentation as well(that could just be in my head though). It lays on plywood over slats. PLEASE HELP.

Hi Tom. Flip it over. The poly foam that supports the memory foam is a better product. You may need to soften the surface to make it more comfortable. You can do that with a topper, of some type. I suggest it NOT be memory foam. Latex is the best type.
You may also need a new pillow....one that will keep your head and neck aligned with your spine.
