Thanks Peter for your answer. I had said that my new Sealy Posturepedic Signature Ultra Plush queen set sloped down at the head and the foot and looked fuller in the middle. Maybe saying fuller in the middle was not the best way to explain it. What I meant was that the head and foot ends of the mattress were not as full as the rest of the mattress. The entire mattress top has rows of teardrop shaped stitching. These teardrop shape stitchings are about 2 1/2 inches long. The mattress top is even until it gets to about the last 4 1/2 inches before the seams at the foot and head of the mattress and then begins to slopes down. This 4 1/2 inch downward slope includes the last row of stitching and about 2 inches of padding on the other side before the seam. The lowest points of this last 2 inches of padding measures about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches lower than the padding on the rest of the mattress. Is this normal sloping? When you answered my question you said that "There's something of a crown at all the edges". Can you explain more about what you mean by a crown at all the edges? From my original description, you said the picture you got sounded abnormal and to call the store and ask for someone there to come out and have a look at it. Based on my further description do you still think this sounds abnormal? Thanks again for all your help.
Ciao Roma. The padding is piled on top of the coil unit and the quilted top is sewn to the border panel. When they are pulled together and sewn, it creates a "crown". ...the curved edge. So, if you measure from the bottom of the mattress to to welting, it'll be shorter than if you measure to the actual top. The outer fabric, which is very large, is quilted on a huge machine in a continuous feed. The size needed is cut from that. The quilt isn't like the old patterns. It's called tack and jump. When the quilted top is cut to size, the place where it's tacked can end up being close to the edge. When this happens, it exaggerates the crown. From your further explaination, it sounds like that's what happened with yours. It wouldn't be considered a defect and being so close to the edge, have no affect on the feel of the mattress. If you still have concerns, it doesn't hurt to call the store.
