Hi Again, I had written about 2 weeks ago inquiring about your opinion on the Kaymed Sleep Spa Gel Therapy Bed. We've had it for almost 3 weeks now and I hate it! My husband loves it. My husband is about 180-190lbs, I am about 115lbs, and as I indicated before, low back pain--vertabrae and disc degeneration. I am finding it is true that spending more money doesn't necessarily provide you with a better nights sleep. The Kaymed was about $3400...we are now looking at the Sealy Posturepedic Falmouth, originally the Cushion Firm, but now I am thinking the Cushion Plush. They didn't have it in stock so I have to wait until next week to get it...both the CF and the CP were just over $1400, does that seem too cheap for a King? After reading your blog the past couple weeks, it is seeming that the Cushion Plush is comparable to the Beachside you keep recommending, is that accurate? I am at my wits end as all the mattresses seem comfy in the store but after getting them home and sleeping on the! m for a couple weeks, not always the case. The Kaymed also started giving me neck and shoulder pain--I am a side and stomach sleeper. From what I've read on your blog, it sounds like the Plush might be a good choice for me, allowing my shoulder to sink in better and keep spine aligned--husband can pretty much be comfy on anything so that is not an issue. Whatcha think. And thank you soooo much for your blog, I am sure it keeps you quite busy. YOU are such a valuable resource as there is WAY TOO MUCH information that us average folk just can't decifer. Thank you in advance for your response.
Hi Sarah. In this industry, there's a never ending parade of expensive gimmicky types of mattresses, designed to see how much money can be sapped out of the pockets of the American public. The sharpies that come up with these things can't totally be blamed for bilking you out of thousands of dollars. You, as a society, bear some responsibility in that if it's "NEW", you gotta have it. Madison Ave. shoulders some responsibility also. They know that if they continually tell you how great some expensive piece of junk is, you'll continually keep buying it.
You mention that $1400 seems too cheap for a king. If you were lead to believe that $3400 is what you needed to spend to get the great night's sleep that your technological wonder promised to deliver, then I can see how you would think that.
There are 2 men, I know, who each have a few mattress stores in Delaware. They are both in competition with one of these mega-mattress chains. This mega chain, while flooding the media with promises of the lowest prices, were actually inflating their prices. When customers would also shop at one of these smaller family stores, where the prices were actually discounted, they voiced their concerns that these less expensive mattresses couldn't be the same quality as at the higher priced store. So, in order to compete with this mega-chain, my friends had to raise their prices.
That's the power of advertising. Memory foam is another one of these hyped type of mattresses. The ads for Tempurpedic are everywhere. Guess who pays for that advertising.
Your information sensors are on over load because you can't separate the straight dope from the hype. On a whole, you can forget most of what info you're storing, because almost everything you hear is hype and buzz words. If a salesman is talking to you and you can feel your eyes glazing over as he speaks, that how you know it's time to shop elsewhere.
You asked me what I think. I think you were sold a bill of goods. At $2149 in king, the Beachside will out perform anything on the market at any price. The Sealy Posturepedics at $1200 in king are excellent buys. Stay away from the pillowtops. They tend to lose their shape quicker than a tight top.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all you used car salesmen out there. You are no longer the most mistrusted, sleeziest salespeople in the country. You have been outdone.
