I've been devouring your site for hours now, and decided I'd just go straight to the source. My husband and I have been sleeping on an old Serta mattress for the past 9 years. It is the same mattress he had in his bachelor pad and has a huge dip in the middle. We just had a small unexpected windfall this week and he has given me permission to buy a new mattress set this weekend, but he will not be coming with me to buy it! My husband is 6'3, 300lbs, and I am 5'7, 190lbs. We only sleep in the bed together every other week due to his rotating shift schedule as a police officer. I'm looking to keep our budget around $1000 for a queen sized set, and am hoping to get a Euro-plush top. He sleeps on his back/side, and I am a stomach/side sleeper. What do you recommend? I was looking at the Sealy Posturepedic Clear Blue Plush Euro Pillowtop II set, currently on sale at Sears for $699.99, but I realize that at that price it is probably too good to be true...

Hi Pamela. $700 for that set in queen is a steal....and the best use of the money you have.
You do need a set. Mattress only on a 9 y/o boxspring is a bad move.

Sealy Springfree Beachside Mattress

After reading your blog, I am almost sold on theSealy SpringFree Beachside, but am interested in the Serta Pure Response® Valley? What is the difference?
My husband is a back sleeper and I am a stomach sleeper. I want comfort and have put lots of money into toppers that just do not do the trick. I am ready to spend the money on something that will last and help me sleep better and wake with less ache.

Sealy Reflexion Venice Beach Mattress

I purchased a Sealy Reflexion Venice Beach king mattress set two years ago.  I am a side sleeper (5'9" and 145 lbs) and have been experiencing hip and shoulder pain for a while.  I think the mattress is too firm as when I sleep on other old-fashioned coil mattresses, I don't have this problem. I am considering a mattress topper but don't want to throw more money away.  Do you think this is the best option for me?  As you know, the king set was over $2,500 when we purchased it and I don't know what to do.  Also, in the topper, what type do you recommend (latex or memory foam) and what density and thickness?  Thanks so much for your advice!

Hi Becky.  Have you been rotating the mattress? I have the same mattress, (a couple of years older than yours), at home. Too firm isn't how I'd describe it. If the mattress hasn't been rotated, the upper layers that are under you, will have compressed a little. Rotating helps keep it even and gives the top layes time to recover.
Memory foam topper seem to be the cheapest. People write, telling me that it worked and it didn't. (mixed reviews). Latex is more durable, but more expensive. The lower the number on that rating scale, the softer the latex will be. Given your size, I would think that the Ever-Eden 2" of Soft Talalay Latex Mattress Topper would suit you well.

Dormia or Rhapsody Mattress

I went today to check out mattresses.  I suffer with severe back problems.  I have been on a Sealy Posturepedic and a Serta.  I tried a ton of mattresses, and found that I like the foam ones best. I was originally going for a pillow top with a firm mattress underneath.  I liked the Dormia(sp) CL5000 model and the Rhapsody by Theru-pedia (sp).  The price difference is over 3 tines for the Rhapsody.  I can't justify spending $3000 on a mattress.  Is there anything else you would suggest and is the Dormia a good mattress?  Thanks in advance. 

Hi Cathy. My undersatnding is that Dormia recently filed Chapter 11.
If you like the feel of foam, try the Sealy SpringFree latex. It'll hold up better and the price is in between the two. The Beachside model is the most popular. It's plush, but too...more of a medium feel. Lots of women like the softer River Crest. Neither have a pillowtop.

Sealy Springfree Meadowcrest Mattress

Hi Pete,  Your Blog is a breath of fresh air.  I equate you to Ric Edelman, a well-known financial advisor who also 'tells it like it is' and campaigns for standardization and full disclosure in his business of financial investing.   We did a bunch of research after 2 unsuccessful ventures with Sealy PP and S&F innerspring mattresses.  Based pretty much on your Blog, we bought a Spring Free Meadowcrest queen (like your RiverCrest, I think) almost 6 months ago for our guest bedroom and we love it.  I thought it was a plush but apparently it's an ultra-plush.  Now, we're ready to replace the S&F King in the master BR... again with latex.  How much difference in softness is the Beachside vs the RiverCrest.  Spring Free mattresses seem to be a rare commodity in my area of central Florida, and I can't locate a plush to test out.  Also, going from a queen to a king, will that make the same model seem to be a bit softer?   Thanks,

The difference in size won't make as much difference in feel, as you might think....because of the 2 piece boxspring under the king mattress. The difference in feel, between those two is small, but noticeable. You have the advantage of trying your guest room for a while before deciding. Most men prefer the Beachside. Women, who have wider hips, will prefer the River Crest...as it gives better in that area of the body. Women with more slender hips are good with the Beachside.

S&F, Stearns and Foster Latex Nature Home Jasmine Dream Mattress

After a number of mattress searches, I've finally stumbled across a mattress that seems to be really comfortable.  It's called Stearns and Foster Latex Nature Home Jasmine Dream.  I'm getting it from a liquidation warehous with the box spring for about 800 bucks.  I have two herniated discs though, and I worry that the level of comfort inherent in that bed might leave me feeling sore and uncomfortable.  Have you dealt with this particular mattress before, and do you have any thoughts?  You seem to have free shipping, and if that is indeed the case I would definitely be interested in learning about what you have. Hi Ian. The Jasmine Dreams was a Macy's label. It was available as a firm or an ultra plush. The herniated disc would be better on the firm. If you have the ultra plush, you'll need to sleep on your side. It'll be too soft for a back sleeper with disc trouble. $800 is a good price, but comes with no factory warranty. Here, the firm is called Weybridge and the ultra plush is called River Crest...using the Sealy SpringFree label.

Low mattress for a platform

I just purchased a platform bedframe and need a low profile matress (ideally 9" or less). I have tested out the deluxe tempurpedic and it appears comfortable. Also have tested the sealy tranquil sea and one of the kingsdown springfree line. After reading readers comments, i am more confused now. Folks including you appear to like the sealy beachside, but i think it is too thick at 11.5".  Do you have any other ideas? How about cotton or wool matresses? Is it true about the "imprint" left in the latex matresses over time?... Thanks for your opinion.

Hi Kathryn. "Imprint" is much more prevalent in the memory foam mattresses. The Tranquil Sea at 13", is too thick also, and not a latex mattress. Only 1.57" of that is latex. Your choice of platform bed has created a problem for you. The problem with platforms that limit the thickness of the mattress is that you are very limited as to what you can buy. A different platform...one that is less restrictive, will allow you greater flexability.

Nature's Rest Pillowtop Mattress

Hi Peter, I bought a Nature's Rest pillow top 3 years ago and it has developed a "hole" in the middle. I weigh 175lbs. I've tried turning the mattress over, but is encased in a polyurethane shell on 3 sides that makes the bottom too hard. Do you think I should try a latex topper on the hard side, or am I throwing away more money? I've read your recommendations for the Beachside, but am reluctant to spend for a new bed if I can avoid it. Thanks!

Hi Arnold. That company had a lot of problems. Unneccessary zoning and latex in the quilt is what I see as their biggest problem. It comes with a warranty. Did you call the store to have it inspected? If the hole is deep enough, you may be able to get an exchange.
Body impressions can be expected with any mattress. It's when they  get deep, that they're a problem. The Beachside is one of those that never gives me or my customers a problem. Before buying new, check to see if a warranty claim is an option.
