Hi Peter, I am very impressed with your blog site and am desperate for some help. My husband & I replaced our Sealy Posturepedic mattress 11 months ago (it was 12 yrs old) with the Sealy spring free latex (Beachside plush). I didn't have any back problems; he has some herniated discs in his lower back. After 6 months, there were deep ruts in our mattress - so much so that I began having back issues. Our salesman was fabulous and did an even exchange saying there must be something wrong with the mattress. Well, here we are 5 months later with ruts again - not as bad (we put plywood between the matress & box spring) but they're still there. I am having muscle spasms in my back every night. I can't sleep more than 5 hrs max and have to jump out of bed because it hurts to much to first sit up then get up. I fall asleep on my side but used to end up on my stomach - not any more. Our salesman is willing to work with us again and has pointed us to a Stearns & Foster with coils in the pillowtop. Do you know anything about these? I'm afraid to purchase a pillowtop of any kind because of the body indentations, but I like a little more comfort than just a firm mattress. Any suggestions?
Hi Tracey, The more rigid support of an interlocked innerspring would have been a better choice for a herniated disc. I wouldn't go as high up the line as your salesman is recommending. A firmer tight top model would be the kind of mattress to consider.
