S&F, Stearns & Foster Chateau Vitre w/ low boxspring

Thanks for answering my prev question relative to what new S&F to replace my Denfield with.
Think we have settled on the Chateau Vitre...more support, firmer, and since my wife didn't care for the Sealy Spring Free line, or latex in general, this was a good compromise.
My question though, concerns the box springs. We like the idea of having the low-profile 5 1/2" ones instead of the standard, as she's shorter, and it'd make it easier getting in/out of the bed.
But will a shorter-height box spring last as well?
And if so, how does it do it, and would we notice any difference in the firmness?

Hello Wayne. Since you put it that way, I'll tell ya.
The configuration of the torsion bar boxspring is the same in both heights. The low profile boxspring has less room to flex, which makes it a tiny bit stronger.
With a mattress as thick, 16.5", as the Chateau Vitre, the low profile boxspring is the way to go.

A latex topper for a S&F, Stearns & Foster Ellastone mattress

My wife and I purchased a S&F Ellastone mattress from you about 3 years ago. I would like to add a latex topper because the mattress is a bit too firm for me. Do you recommend a 2" or a 3" topper (I am a side sleeper)? Also, do you recommend the 100% latex or the Talalay foam? Thanks for your help.

Hi Milt. Talalay latex is 100% latex....a blend of natural and synthetic. It doesn't really matter if the topper is Talalay or all natural or all synthetic. They all wear well. What does matter is the ILD rating and how thick. I have a 1" latex topper at home that I use from time to time. 1" makes a difference. So you have to have some sort of feel for how much softer you need the bed to be.
ILD ratings run low to high, soft to firm. A 20 ILD is nice and soft.
If the bed is as you say, "a bit too firm", I would think that 2" would be enough. Latex mattress toppers shown here:

Polyurethane foam mattress

I slept on a Marriott supreme mattress, which they told me is a 7in 100% poured polyurethane foam mattress by Jamison. I wanted this mattress, but they do not make a twin xl which I need for our adjustable king bed. I just got a Sealy meadowcrest and I hate it. It is much firmer than I like and I think its just plain unconfortable. My night at the Marriott was the best sleep I've had in years and my night last night on the Meadowcrest was the worst. What can I get that would be most like the Marriott? Thanks!

Hi Cathy. Poly foam and latex feel about the same. The difference is in the extraordinary longevity of latex. Pl=oly foam is comfortable and very inexpensive. Bat as with any foam, density and firmness can be regulated. What you slept on in the hotel was a very inexpensive mattress and the one you bought you've had only one night....and you're the very first person I've heard say that was too soft.
When away, as on vactaion at a hotel, the cares and stresses of everyday life tend to be forgotten for that short time...as they should be.
You can go to an upholstery shop or a fabrics store and have a 7" piece of poly foam cut for you. The missing element is in knowing and duplicating the density of the foam at the hotel.

Sealy Springfree Latex

I am in the market for a new bed and am hoping you can advise me on getting an appropriate mattress for my stature (5'3 Male, 120 pounds). Through reading your blog, it would seem as if latex is good for side sleepers (which I am). Would a Sealy Spring Free mattress be appropriate for me?  Also, what is your opinion with regards to buying a mattress with a pillowtop vs buying one without and then putting on a topper?  I have read that it may be better to get a mattress without a pillowtop because the pillowtop will lose it's shape and form after a few years and can't be replaced.  Whereas with a topper, you can replace it after it loses it's usefulness.  Will a topper be just as effective as a pillowtop? 

Hi Bryce. A latex bed would be fine for you. We have plenty of customers who add their own topper if they feel they need it, down the line. It will give you the same effect as a pillowtop. Depending on how soft you like your bed, it may not even be necessary. That's something you can decide later. The softest latex model, without a pillow top, would be the Rivercrest.

A sealy mattress for an adjustable bed

I have ALS(mild at this point) and have a little difficulty turning in bed(use a rail). I was considering a Sealy posturepedic pillow top or spring free latex on an adjustable bed. My concern is how much you form/sink to the latex and would it make turning more difficult? I know that tempupedic or memory foam does cause problems with some patients who have little strength to turn.

Hi Karyn. The latex doesn't have the problem that memory foam has. The Beachside model, having a medium feel, is your best choice. It allows for comfort, but not so soft as to make turning more difficult. In the States, the Posturepedic innerspring is no longer available for an adjustable bed.
The coils produce pressure points, which wouldn't good for you. The pillowtop will make turning difficult once the body impression forms...and it will.

A mattress for differing tastes

The search for the right mattress continues.
I know I want Sealy. We are modest income people with 2 different sleeping styles. I am a back sleeper my husband a side sleeper. What he like is too soft for me and what I like is too firm for him. We live in a small town where we can't try out a bunch of mattresses unless we drive 2 hours so I m looking at buying something online.
Perhaps you could suggest what to buy? As I know that the names change by company, perhaps you could recommend specifics for us so I can shop? I am also curious if you ship to New Mexico?  Or can you recommend an online company that you would trust that does?

There are two way to approach your problem. You can find a mattress that the two of you can agree on. This would require compromise. The Sealy SpringFree Beachside is such a mattress, being neither too soft nor too firm. The other is to satisfy you with the mattress and add a topper to soften his half...shown here:

Hi Ira. The Sealy SpringFree is 100% synthetic latex. Latex is the most durable material available in a mattress.
Nothing else lasts as long. Latex is actually cheaper in cost per year of use than anything else you can buy. More good news...you don't need anything more than the starting model. The Beachside is their best seller and for more reasons than price. It has the medium feel, on which most people find gives the best sleep. You would only choose the higher priced models because you wanted it firmer of softer. They don't last any longer.

Hi Sherry. We carry a Sealy stain guard mattress pad that we all use at home. It's a treated breatheable cotton and fits even the thickest mattresses. The one we chose isn't very thick, so it won't add to the softness of the mattress. We sold tons of them and not a one has come back.

Memory foam mattress for our 9 y/o daughter

Hi Margaret, If you read through this blog, you'll see a lot of negative comments about memory foam. You'll even catch me raling against it. Your circustances are unique. You have the advantage of knowing that she sleeps well in your Tempurpedic. I don't think you should fool around with this and stick to what you know will work. Tempurpedics are expensive. In fact, they are way over priced as a result of the continuous advertising. Memory foam is what gives it the feel it has and you can find any number of memory foam models from various brands at a more reasonable price. Since she is so light, you may even get away with a 3" layer to add to the mattress she has. That will also mimic the feel of your bed. Sealy's True Form line is like the Tempurpedic.
Keep in mind that sleeping with you also adds to her comfort...her inner peace.
