A warranty claim on a 9 year old mattress

What are some key words to be used when filling out a warraty form?  We have had a Stearns and Foster for 9 years and have just replaced it with another Stearns and Foster.  We had been uncomfortable on the bed for several years and finally had had enough.  We have gone with Stearns and Foster again, our feeling is tlhat they are the best bed out there.  We are still planning on using the old mattress in our guest bedroom for company, but do not want them as uncomfortable as we have been.  I am in the process of filling out a warranty claim form and was wondering if there are any key words to use.  Also, they ask if you have moved since owing your mattress and we have.  They want to know who our mover was, is this really important?  Should I put down that we moved the mattress ourselves?  Are they going to blame the indentations on the movers?  Any help would be appreciated!!!

Laurie, The warranty protects against defects in workmanship and material. What you have is a 9 year old mattress that is worn out. What you're attempting is disingenuous. I'm always happy to help someone with a problem or to find the best value. You're asking me to help you get something for nothing. Well Laurie, contrary to what you may believe, I'm not sap...and neither are the people at S&F. You aren't likely to get away with it.

Thank you Linda, There is no equivilent for a mattress that old. Materials used now are different. For the best value in the Posturepedic line, levels 5 thru 7 offer the best bang for the buck.

Looking to buy a latex mattress for durability and my fibromyalgia

I have been looking at and researching mattresses for about 3 months and get more confused all the time.  I have fibromyalgia and need a good mattres.  I had neck surgery about 5, 6 years ago which has helped, but I really need a good night sleep.  My husband likes a bed to be firmer.  He tosses and turnes all night.  The mattress we have is at least 15 years old and is a Simmons Beautyrest, which is in real bad shape.  I have looked at latex because of the durability, Serta Vera Wang, King Koil, Sealy and Stearns & Foster.  Any suggestions. 

Hi Ruth, The Sealy SpringFree is the most trouble free and the best value. The starting model, the Beachside is the most popular and is nice and comfy...firm, but not hard...plush, but not too soft. Eventhough it's a plush, your husband should be comfortable enough on it. You can add a latex or feather topper to your half for the fibromyalgia. Like the ones shown here:

Hi Robert, The Posturetouch provides a contouring support, like the latex does. The fibromyalgia requires a soft surface. There's nothing wrong with your choice, but you may need to add a topper to whatever mattress you buy. Like the ones shown here:

A mattress to fit my hips

I purchased my Sealy latex matress(firm) from Mattress Giant and I have to exchange due to lower back pain. At first it seemed soft but got harder each day and it seems to create a dip where I sleep and when I try to move I seem to roll back into it, sort of. I wrote to you about help with the exchange, but I thought if I told you where I purchased it you might be able to help me more. I am heavy in the hip area and probably need support there. I heard Spring Air has more support in the middle of their mattress and also Mattress Giant carries Kingsdown, which I know nothing about really, except they are expensive and handmade. I am not sure about pillowtops due to feeling hot. I have never had one. I actually feel very hot on the latex mattress, but I have a very thin pad on it, more like a liner really, for sanitary exchange purposes. I just can't take the back pain. I sleep on my side and stomach mostly.  I am out of ideas because I thought the latex would be best and it is not for my back. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Merilee, MG doesn't carry all of the models in the Sealy latex line. You bought the ultra plush. You may be sinking too much. You need to bring someone with you when you shop. Have them look at you from the back as you're trying them on your side. What they want to look for is to see if your hip sinks just enough to keep your spine aligned. It's hard to fit a woman with big hips. You might try getting a 3" latex topper for the mattress you have. The latex is still your best buy. It's just a question of getting the right padding. S&F, Stearns & Foster Manhattan Select latex mattress

My wife and I tested many mattresses.  We chose the Stearns and Foster Manhattan Select king latex mattress after doing much homework and in-store testing.
We've had our new mattress for a little more than a week.  The bed we have feels much softer than the same model we tried in several stores.  Also, there are body indentations that remain more than 6 hours after getting out of bed (Note: we are both of average build). 
We have several questions:
1. Is there a break-in period for this type of bed?
2. If so, how long is the break-in period?
3. Again, if so, would the use of a Protect-a-Bed mattress cover affect breaking in the mattress?
3. If there is a break-in period, might the bed feel firmer at the end of this period?
4. We were told to expect little to no indentation and that latex pushed back to give support.  This bed retains indentations when we change positions and doesn't seem to push back for more than 6 hours.  Might this bed be defective?

Hi Dave, It doesn't sound like latex. Goof ups happen at the factory once in a while. It isn't unheard of that the right label is on the wrong mattress.
The mattress pad will have no affect.
The break in, or adjustment period is more you getting use to the mattress than it is the mattress settling in.
It sounds like you got something other than what you ordered. It sounds like memory foam.

A king mattress for us and a full/queen for our son

In search of a new king size mattress.  Both my husband and I have lower back and shoulder/neck pain.  I have had surgery on my neck and I am postponing the next surgery as long as I can.  I am 5'2 and weigh 107lbs.  My husband is 5'8" and weighs 225lbs.  Really like the feel of S&F Plaza Regency Elite mattress, but don't really know if this is what we need to give us a good nights sleep.  Also looking at a full or queen mattress for our teenage son.  He's 5'3" and weighs 112lbs.  He also complains about his neck/back/knees.  He really liked the S&F Landmark Elite.  Seemed too soft to me.  Any info or help would be greatly appreciated, since we obviously haven't purchased the correct type of mattress to date.  Thanks!

Hi Mandy, your neck pain is better addressed with the right pillow. Besides being comfortable, the pillow has to bridge the distance between the bed and neck, while maintaining the necks alignment with the spine. A side sleeper will need a thicker pillow than a back sleeper.
For a mattress, you want to stay away from the real plush ones. The best night's sleep is had from choosing one with just enough padding to be comfortable. It's easy to be seduced by the ultra plush and pillowtop models.
Something in a lower to mid level Sealy Posturepedic would be more of an appropriate purchase for a teen.

New mattress has a horrible smell

Heidi Ballard of Columbus, writes: I bought a very expensive Stearns and Foster Dali Firm manufactured at the Sealy plant in Medina. After delivery a horrible smell - like tobacco, old kitchen trash - came up from the mattress for weeks. I finally complained to Macy's (dealer) who sent a technician that declared the mattress had "bad foam" - uncured and molding. 10 days later, yesterday, a new mattress was delivered (same kind). Smell was even worse and seemed like some horrible, awful extreme chemical fumigation smell overlay the same old "bad foam" smell. Worse still, it burns my nose and throat and makes my eyes water. I called the manufacturer today only for them to tell me that people do complain about the smell but she assured me it is just new mattress smell and will go away if I air out the mattress for 4 weeks. And - what? Am I to sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor until then?! How carcinogenic can this VISCO memory foam be??? Or glue or whatever? I have purchased many mattresses in my life but this beats all - and of course, is the first memory foam mattress. Appreciate any feedback... Hello heidi, The strong odor is from improperly cured poly foam. These foams are made by a seperate maunufacturer and purchased by all the mattress makers. These rolls of foam are huge, so one bad roll will affect all the mattresses made with it. Every mattress will have something of a "new" smell, like carpet padding and sofas have. When you encounter a very strong odor: 1) Don't wait weeks before calling the store. 2) Call the store and not the factory 3) Do Not accept a replacement mattress from stock, as all the mattresses from that batch are likely to be affected. Have them order the replacement from the factory. It is highly unlikely to get a second one with that problem if handled this way.

3" or 2" latex mattress topper

I just purchased a latex topper for my plush Serta King size mattress. I need a firm support because I was getting back pain on my super pillowtop but I also need a soft top to keep my arms and legs from having pressure problems as I sleep on side a lot of the time. I purchased my latex topper today and it should arrive soon. I went with a 3 inch but now am wondering if that will be too much and I should have gone with a 2 inch. What thickness do most people go with? If i am a stomach sleeper, will i be able to still stomach sleep on a 3 inch or will that be too soft. I got the 20 softness grade. I can return the 3 inch for a 2 inch for 30 days. What do you think?

Hi Janie, It doesn't matter what I think. There's no way to anticipate which topper thickness is best for you. The beauty of all this is that you can return it if it doesn't suit you. There's little point to worrying about something like this, since you're no stuck if it's too thick.

The level, to which I refer, are levels of expense. This is information provided by the factory. These are NOT comfort levels. There is usually a choice of comfort at each level. There is no industry standards for comfort levels. The should be used as a general guide only. You wouldn't want to go into a store and as for a specific comfort level, as everyones idea of those are somewhat different.
