S&F, Stearns & Foster Reisling mattress

My wife and I are in our late 50's, with chronic lower back problems and see the Reisling seems to be a good fit for us. We are in the Northeast Georgia Mountains and can't find a Reisling or comparable mattress to it. We did find a Flat Iron in Atlanta @ Bloomingdales but it was $3,000+. Also today we found a Plaza line in a nearby city and they had the Manhattan Reserve that we seemed to like. They also had a Terrace Room Dreams. Are we anyplace close to the Reisling with either of these? If not, can you give us any suggestions to get something comparable to a Reisling? Hi George, The Manhattan Reserve is a level 6 cushion firm, same as my Abbeville. It's firmer than the Reisling and has the foam injcted edge support that starts at level 6. The Reisling is a level 4. The Flat Iron cushion firm is the same as the Reisling, but the Flat Iron also comes in an ultra plush version. The Terrace Dreams is a level 3 plush pillowtop and is a bit softer than the Reisling. There must be lots of mattress stores in Atlanta. Log onto www.stearnsandfoster.com and enter an Atlanta zipcode into the store locator. It'll show all the S&F dealers in the Atlanta area. You can call around to see who has it. There are several other model names that it goes by, but all will be the "level 4 cushion firm pillowtop".

Mattress fire

Yesterday in the morning I went to my room and the mattress were on fire on the top. not the whole mattress. my baby was there and i dont know what happens. because it is a flame resistant mattress. do the mattress have a warranty? I will like to repair it or do something because it was kind of expensive.Can you help me please????

Hello Leila, The factory warranty protects you from defects in workmanship and materials with normal use. What you described isn't covered under that warranty. If you have fire insurance, you should call your insurance company.

A mattress for a waterbed frame.

Hi Diane, Recommendations are made based on personal needs. That you are working with a waterbed frame
doesn't norrow the field. Meansure your frame. Nearly all king waterbeds were the California size...72" x 84".
If you merely ask for a king, you could end up with a mattress that doesn't fit...78" x 80". The biggest
problem you'll encounter is getting sheets and other linens on the mattress. The fit of the mattress
in the frame is often so tight, dressing the bed becomes the major headache of the day.

A mattress for fibromyalgia and degenerative disc disease

I have fibromyalgia and disc disease. My 4 year old Simmons Shawnee innerspring (no longer made)
was no longer usable and I'd been using eggcrate foam on top all along. I also have degenerative disk
disease and lying on the latex for 25 minutes resulted in back stiffness.. I bought a Simmons Fair Oaks
from Sleep Country USA; it bothers my pressure points and my body will leave an impression in the pillowtop.
The store said the Fair Oaks and less plush Westwood were most like the Shawnee. Also recommended were the
Stearns/Foster Monmouth Castle and less plush Kelso Abbey. I'm guessing I'd need to choose the Westwood or
Kelso. Do you have any opinions about this or do you have another idea? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Kirk, The Monmouth Castle (my Strasbourg Park), is a level 6 S&F with the better edge support. The
Kelso Abbey (my Julianne), is a level 2. Both are pretty comfortable, so it would come down to what you
like better. Having the duel problem of degenerative discs and fibromyalgia, which have opposing needs,
You might consider a firmer mattress with toppers that can be replaced when worn. Soft mattresses,
like the ones you're cosindering, feel good initially. But as the padding compresses, they'll lose some
of their shape and become firmer, which isn't good for either of your problems. If going with the firmer
mattress and topper, I'd recommend a latex topper under a feather topper. Under those circumstances,
the Abbeville is a good choice. If money is no object, the level 9 S&F, (Chateau Vitre), has the unique
feel of being suspended...almost like you're floating. It uses a short, individually pocketed coil above
S&F's standard heavy coil.

A latex mattress for scoliosis?

We are replacing our mattress and are having a hard time deciding what we
want.  We have looked at the Stearns and Foster Latex, but have read where
conforming foam is not good for scoliosis.  But I have also heard the
opposite.  I do have a moderate - severe scoliosis curve.  What is your
recommendation?   We currently are trying the Beauty Rest version with the

Hi Caroline, Some years ago, I noticed that my friend, who had bothersome case of scoliosis, found relief from lying on the floor, whenever pain from the problem flared up. My customers with scoliosis routinely sleep better and with less pain when the mattress provides a more rigid base support than those that provide a contouring support. Foam, air, water and individually pocketed coils provide contouring support. Stearns & Foster uses a heavy interlocked coil system and is the best selection for your scoliosis. There are a total of 31 models in the S&F line. Not all are a good choice for you. You'll want one with just enough padding to sleep comfortably, but should be careful not to choose one that is too soft.

Mattress comfort levels

Why is that your comfort ratings on your website differs from other websites. For example, your comfort ratings for the Julianne is at 2 while Us-Mattress is at 6.5. This really confuses me because I do not know which is more accurate. Hi Jeff, Your confusion comes from assuming that the levels refered to on my website are comfort levels. They are not. They are levels of expense. They are how the manufacturer grades their mattresses from least expensive to most expensive. The information is provided to you, by me, so that you can compare and know if what you are shopping for is of the same value as models of the same level with different names. It's provided to you so that you won't be fooled by salespeople who would sell you a level 2 Bellesguard (my Etoile), and tell you it is the same as the level 4 Reisling. There are no industry standards for comfort levels. They are made up by the person writing them. Since everyone's idea of comfort is somewhat different, comfort levels should be viewed as a general guide only. Because comfort levels are so subjective, and because consumers are so easily misled by them, I don't offer them. Instead, we determine what works for you based your individual needs, then make suggestions based on that.

A bias toward latex mattress

My husband and I have been on the same king sized, coil, pillow top mattress for almost ten years.  To say the least it is completely worn and I have had back/hip pain and little sleep for the last 4/5 of those years.  We are looking for something new!
We are in our upper 20's (5'5'-120lbs and 5'10" 210 lbs) with no medical problems.  My first thought was towards a Sleep Number bed, but after reading reviews and thinking about the quality I am completely turned off.  I am weary of coil mattresses because they seem to wear out so quickly--we cannot afford to buy a new mattress every few years.  Would you strongly suggest a latex bed or a higher quality coil???

Hi Elissa, your question defines my bias....which is no way, slight. I am extremely bias toward products that provide
value. You're right, with many coil mattresses comfort is fleeting. Latex is comfortable a very long time and is the very best bang for your buck. Latex is very old technology, so it's not like it's a new product that we're guessing about. It's been a proven item since the 1920's. The best value in latex is the Sealy SpringFree line. Being a brand that is so easy to shop keeps the prices lower. Salespeople push the off brands because the profit margins are greater and you'll have a hard time shopping it. The best value in the Sealy line is the starting model, the Beachside. It has an in between feel that most people like, but if you need it to be firmer or softer, the next models up will provide that...the Weybridge (firm) and River Crest (ultra plush).

Mattress #4 for a couple of 250 pounders.

My wife and I are each about 250 pounds.  It was time to get a new King Size mattress. 
Mattress #1 - Top of the line Stearns & Foster Silver Dream Extra Plush Pillowtop - Huge mistake.  Our backs killed instantly and we had deep impressions within a few months.  The inspector declared it as defective so we exchanged it for:
Mattress #2 - We figured the pillowtop was the culprit, so we got a Stearns & Foster Wintherthur Firm Bed.  Deadly.  Within a few weeeks are backs were destroyed.  It too was defective, so based on your recommendations on latex, we exchanged it for...
Mattress #3 - Sealy Spring Free Latex Mattress.  Terrible for us.  The funny thing is, it's never just one of us that is sore from these beds.  It's always both of us that wake up with excrutiating backaches.  Once again, we had deep impressions, and they are letting us exchange one last time...
What should we do?
We are young, active, somewhat overweight, healthy for the most part adults.  Is there any bed that will be right for us?

Hi Jay, You don't mention which latex mattress you got. As in any type of mattress, there is too soft and too firm....
not soft enough and not firm enough. The Winterthur was not a firm, but a cushion firm. It's from lat years line, where memory foam was used to create the (cushion) part of the cushion firm. Body impression form much more easily when memory foam is near the top of the mattress...as was the case with the Winterthur. It had 2" of memory foam just under the quilted cover. Almost everyone I know personally, is sleeping on latex....and I know a lot of big people. If you backs hurt that much on latex, it's likely that you have some disc problems that haven't been diagnosed. Disc problems develop over years and you may not know about it. Go back to the S&F line. They have since removed all the memory foam on top and replaced it with a layer of latex.
It sounds like mattress #2 was good for the first few weeks, until the memory foam caved. Look at the Abbeville for a firm mattress that isn't stiff. If you feel you need it firmer, the Chateau Paris would be the one to try.

Split king mattress for motion reduction

We are currently in the market for a king size mattress that will reduce motion transfer.  We have a wooden, king size bed frame that we love, but I sometimes find myself wishing we had separate beds because I sleep lightly.  I was wondering if placing 2 twin mattresses side by side in a king frame would be helpful in reducing motion transfer. 

Hi Judy, A king is longer than a twin. To duplicate the king size, you would need to order 2 twin-XL. And yes, it will make a difference. Another benefit is the ability to get the mattress that suits you best, if you don't agree on how it should feel. A latex mattress is a good choice for motion reduction. Latex is very comfortable and extremely long lasting, too. If going with innerspring, the Sealy Posturepedic has a bouncier feel than the Stearns & Foster. The coils in the S&F are heavier and provide a more solid feel. The Simmons Beautyrest is the best known coil system for motion reduction. But the steel in their individually pocketed coils are not tempered, which reduces the resiliency.
