MY husband and I just spent 2 1/2 hrs. at Mancinni's trying out many mattresses. Could not beleive the prices. We tried out a mattress by Kluft the Isabella firm. Seemed very confortable.
Soft top but firm and supportive. Our only concern is the soft top. Wiil it leave a body impression? We once had a mattress with a pillow top and after a couple of months it felt like we were sleeping in a hole. This mattress is $5,200. We don't want to spend that much money and have the same problem. Any suggestions? We both have lower back problems and shoulder pain. We both like  a firm mattress but not to firm, with enough support.  We are both 60 years old. I am 5' tall and 125 lbs my husband is 5'10" and 195 lbs. We would appreciate and help you can give us.

Hello Jane, $5,200 is an awful lot of money for a mattress....I assume that's the king price. Soft tops anf body impressions usually go hand in hand. Oddly enough, there is a S&F latex firm mattress with the same model name..."Isabella". This latex model doesn't have a soft surface, but the contouring property of latex make it comfortable. Latex isn't likely to get the body impression you're hoping to avoid. The price for a king set is only $2399.

Allergic to polyurethane foam in the mattress

After 6 months of hardly any sleep I've finally decided to try out a different mattress. In my hunt for a new bed, I must say I'm really shocked by the number of choices out there - it's really mind boggling.  I came across this website a few days ago and it's been quite informative and helpful - really the best site I've seen so far.
So, here's my deal...
Initially I bought the Tempurpedic Rapsody and found it incredibly uncomfortable, but more importantly I found it very toxic, since it contains polyurethane foam (which I'm allergic to, headaches, nausea, itching). The store I purchased the bed from was very understanding about my allergy and has agreed to refund my money since they are unable to offer an other bed that does not contain polyurethane. 
A friend of mine has recommended the S&F all latex bed (Baroque?) and I'm also looking at the Sealy Spring Free Meadowcrest.  I'm a side and stomach sleeper looking for good support and a soft cushy feel. I'm also looking for a bed that does not contain polyform...or at least very little of it.  Which of the two beds would you recommend and why?  Thanks, C.

Hi Carolyn, I don't know of any mattress made today that has no polyfoam. The Meadowcrest, my River Crest, has more than the other tight tops in the line. The Sealy SpringFree latex model that has the least is the Weybridge frim. The little poly foam that is used, is at the top. Given the allergy, a latex topper on the firm model would give you the extra comfort you want, and also would add a hypo-allergenic layer...insulating you from the poly foam.

Adjustable bed with latex mattress for mom

Hi Marya, You don't have to be 88 to love an adjustable bed. The River Crest mattress is great for arthritis.  I imagine that she has a hard time getting comfortable. Not only that, she probably doesn't stay comfortable very long in any one position.  The adjustable bed will allow your mom to change her position at the touch of a button.
Cost is always a factor, but if you can afford it, it;s the most comfortable she can get.

Hi George, The Serta isn't all Talalay latex, just topped with it. It has a natural latex core. All the different latex wear and feel about the same. Synthetic latex is the only type that doesn't smell like rubber. The consistency of the cell structure insures That each model feels the same every time one's made. Natural latex, as with any natural product, varies in consistency. The very quality of the rubber varies, depending on the sap that's harvested. Variations in rainfall and temperature have an affect on the sap that comes from the rubber tree. Longer warranties are an inducement to buy. When products are of questionable quality or over priced, as are many celebrity endorsed items, the longer warranty creates the illusion that it is a superior product...or worth the extra money. Warranties protect you against defects and have nothing to do with how long they'll last or how well they'll wear. Read the warranty card carefully.

Very happy with our S&F, Stearns & Foster Reisling mattress

Hi Peter,
We took your advice and have we ever been happy with our Reisling... can't
tell you what a difference a good night sleep makes.
We recieved our King size Reisling three weeks ago.  After the first week I
noticed the pitting starting, and since that was the problem with our last
mattress, I was a bit nervous. I know you recommend rotating a 1/4 turn
every month at the begining... I actually have been rotating every week for
the first month.  (Tomorrow I'll rotate for the fourth time.)  After that,
I'll rotate 1/4 turn per month, and after that as needed (every three
months?).  It's working like a charm... the bed is so comfortable all the
way out to the edge, and there is no pitting. 
I know people rave about hotel mattresses in their home... well we know
what they're talking about now.

Our new Tempurpedic mattress has a terrible odor

We JUST had our furniture store remove our temperpedic bed from our home.  After 10 days... the horrible smell is still not gone.  We've kept our windows open with a ceiling fan running.  Everything and anything that touches the mattress smells horrific.  Our pillows, bedding, comforter etc. We can "taste" the chemicals on our lips.  Horrible.  The manufacturer said while rare, this does happen when the mattress is wrapped for shipping too soon.  Wonder how toxic this is.  Anyone have this problem?

Hi Donna, That sort of thing is rare at such a severe degree. To a lesser degree, it's not that uncommon. The flame retardant chemicals in the polyfoam can be extremely toxic, if not properly cured. Also, I've had people complain about the glue that's used to bond Tempurpedic's memory foam to the poly foam. I would suggest putting it in the garage, (if you have one), until it can be replaced.

King Latex Floor Sample Mattress

I was so happy to have found your Blog after banging my head around and spending HOURS and fraying several salesmen's nerves while I try out and price every latex mattress I can find in the area.
I've come to the decision that a latex mattress would be the best fit for me, and Sealy seems to have the best rep.
I have a chance to get a "Floor model" Sealy Reflexion Collamore Springless Latex King size mattress for $1500.00 on closeout.
My wife is concerned about buying a "used" bed even though the salesman explained how they are cleaned and disinfected before delivery.
I guess my question is..Is it worth the savings taking a chance on a floor model or should I take the hit and pay the $2400.00 +/-.
I've also considered the various latex mattress's available on-line, but I'm really hesitant on buying anything I can't feel first.
I'm not a wealthy man, but I have serious back problems and I'm tired {literally) of not getting any sleep.
Any help would be Greatly appreciated.

Hi Nick, $1500 for that in king is pretty good. It's an excellent product. The only thing about buying a floor sample is that it doesn't come with a factory warranty....unless you can get them to not write it on the receipt. If it says, "Floor Sample, Clearance, Close-out or As-Is", there's no warranty.  Latex mattresses rarely need service, so the risk is lower.

Twin XL mattress for a growing boy.

Hi Jodi, He'll use that about 4 more years, full time. 4 more years, part time, unless he goes to a local college. Given his current and projected size, a lower level Sealy Posturepedic seems your best buy. The level 2 plush has a good in-between feel that isn't too firm or too soft. A twin extra long (twin-XL) will run about $50 more than the standard twin size. It'll be 80" long, same as a queen and king.

Wading through an array of mattresses

Trying to wade through the dizzying array of mattresses on the market.  My husband (210 lbs) has hip pressure points that he wants to relieve with a new mattress.  I (180 lbs) often have lower back pain and have a hard time getting to sleep although I usually sleep well once asleep.  We are both in our late 50's and both tall.
We have tested the Sleep Number beds and not overly impressed for the price.  Have looked at the Tempurpedic and it seems very comfortable at first blush, but concerned about the heat issues and longevity.
Have noticed that you often recommend latex foam and I have concluded that this may be our best route.  What brand do you think best for us considering our weights and discomforts?  We also intend to use an electric blanket which is discouraged with the memory foam.  We really don't want another coil spring mattress.

Hi Cheryl, The heated blanket isn't a problem with latex. Latex is very durable, regardless of brand. Off brands and those with a celebrity's name endorsement tend to be over priced. The Sealy is the most common and easiest to shop. The increased competition keeps the prices lower than most. So, without question, the Sealy SpringFree latex is the best buy. There are 5 models in the line. The first 3 are standard tight tops and are the most popular. The starting model, the Beachside, is the best seller. Any of them will do a great job of relieving pressure points.

DEFECTIVE MATTRESS

Hello Peter,
It's me again with the coils popping in the 2 week old Beautyrest.  Well, I just had my inspection and it was going well.  He found the popping coil and noted the huge sag in the one side.  He also noted that my box spring has stitching coming out all around it.  However, when he lifted my box spring up he noted that I have 3 boards across with 3 feet on the floor but one of my slats was sagging by about 3/8".  Now I can't help but think, does that void my warranty?  Why wasn't that noticed when the mattress was put into the frame by the installers?  AND, how come my 7 year old Sealy never exhibited any of the same symptoms?  I think that coils popping in a 2 week mattress should scream....DEFECTIVE MATTRESS. 
I welcome your thoughts.   

Hi Jackie, If the problem was only the sagging, then there may be reason to not honor the warranty. However, the popping coils and the open seam has nothing to do with it. Just the same, you'll want to get that slat fixed.
