A too warm mattress in Montana

  Jim from Montana again, sorry that I didn't make myself more clear this morning!  My back does not ache so far on the celebrity bed, but we aren't sleeping well, the bed is warmer than I like and feels different depending on the outside temperature?  I have had no surgeries, just sore lower back from work & stomach sleeping?  Have experience hip pain on the stearns & foster swanwick.  Please give me your advice on a different mattress, I know they (sleep city) handle s & f, and sealy spring free.  Thanks in advance for your site, it helps alot!  Sincerely  Jim

Hi Jim, Sorry for the mis-understanding. Heat is an issue with memory foam. It reflects your body heat back to you and will take a while to soften if the room temperature is cool. You don't have any of these problems with latex. The Sealy SpringFree Beachside plush is the most popular, but if you're having shoulder problems, the ultra plush River Crest may be better suited to you.. If in doubt, go with the Beachside. You can always soften the top if your shoulder demands. The ultra plush tends to be too soft for a stomach sleeper and there's nothing you can do to firm it up if it turns out to be to soft for you.

Sealy SpringFree Paleseed latex mattress is too firm for us

Thanks so much for providing this wonderful service.
We recently replaced a 25 year old, 7" think Aireloom foam mattress because we were experiencing shoulder discomfort.  Amazingly, the mattress was still going strong after all those years.  Based on info we read on your blog, we purchased the Sealy Springfree plush which the local retailer calls "paleseed" and I believe you call "beachside".  Unfortunately from the first night our shoulder pain has been worse and there has been more of a depression in the bed then we had with our old one.  We have this mattress on a platform bed as was the older one and, for aesthetic reasons, we want to limit the height.  We are now wondering if we should exchange this model for the ultra plush, I believe you call that the "Ridge Crest" or buy some kind of topper for it.  Either would raise the bed height by at least another inch.  What do you think?  We're looking for the best long-term solution and the retailer will make an exchange.  We thought this bed felt fine in the store, but it's so hard to tell how it's going to feel after an entire night of sleep by testing it for 15 minutes in the store.  It sure would be great if one of the major manufacturers would make a line of lower profile mattresses for platform beds since they are fairly popular.  Thanks so much for your help.  You're the best.-Mark

Hi Mark, The ultra plush will certainly be softer, better on your shoulder and a long term solution. A topper would be cheaper and an inexpensive way to find out if it'll work. You can get good toppers at cheap prices on overstock.com

Allergic reaction to Tempurpedic mattress

Just spent my first night in my Tempurpedic bed and woke up feeling
sick with a sore throat for one.  I am allegic to neoprene (wetsuits)
and did not think about this wehn purchasing the bed.  I did not wake
up with a bad rash as I get with a wetsuit, but wonder if the fumes
from the new bed and pillow are affecting me or if this is all just a
coincidence.  Are the same chemicals in neoprene used in the foam of
this bed?

Hi David, I couldn't say if the chemicals are the same. No one has written to me before about a problem such as yours. The only allergic reaction I've heard about involved the glue they use to bond the memory foam to the poly foam.

Considering a Sealy SpringFree fairway Dunes latex mattress

Peter,
I am considering purchasing the Fairways Dunes by Sealy.  I read many of
your comments and I saw you refer to this mattress a few times but I am
unclear if you recommend it or not.  I thought I was sold on the
Tempurpedic, Rhapsody, but now I am not so sure.  I love a soft feel but
need the support.  I am a side or stomach sleeper.  I have a sway back and
it hurts in my broken down 16 yr old Beauty Rest.  You mention too soft a
lot.  Is the Fairway too soft. It felt so good to me for the moment.  Are
you totally against the Tempurpedic.  Do they only last a few years.  My
parents have one and love it, but I read too many complaints about it. If
I love soft, is the Fairway too soft and over kill.  Also, I would love the
adjustable but don't know if I want to spend the money.  I love to watch tv
in bed.  Do you think I would regret it if I didn't get it now.  I am
trying to decide between the King Dual or get just one King mattress on top
and the 2 adjustable box springs.  I don't like the idea or the split in
the middle of the bed.

Hi Linda, If you do go with a king matt on a dual adjustable base, both bases would have to be set to the one remote so that they would work together. I have an adjustable bed and I love. I could kick myself for not getting one sooner.
The Fairway Dunes is a good mattress. Personally, I think that it isn't necessary to go to that expense, when the River Crest without the pillowtop is just as comfortableand cost $500 less. You probably will experience some back pain on a mattress that is too soft, given your problem, when you are sleeping on your stomach. If you can restrict yourself to side sleeping, you should be ok. Whether or not the Fairway Dunes is too soft for you, I would have to say that it probably is....but there's no real way to know until you buy it.

Golden Rest adjustable bed

What is your opinion on GoldenRest adjustable beds?
Can an adjustable bed be used with an existing bedframe?
I assume the box springs is part of the adjustable frame.  Can it be
replaced over time if it wears out?
I've never heard of that brand. All of the major mattress brands use the Leggitt & Platt adjustable bed base. The support for the mattress is solid, not springs and hinged. It doesn't really wear out.

S&F, Stearns & Foster Scott's Tower mattress

Peter, thanks for all the info. I will be sending friends to your blog and
website. Just to confirm pillowtop differences: you mention the S& F
Scott's Tower is similiar to the S & F "Le Port"...after looking at
pictures and the mattress that we have - it seems like there is a
difference btwn "Eurotop" and "Euro Pillowtop". The Le Port looks like a
Cushion Firm Eurotop and our Scotts Tower looks like a it has a Euro
Pillowtop. Could the Scotts Tower actually be what you're calling the S & F
CF Euro Pillowtop Riesling? I know it's not a boxtop which I believe runs
flush w/ the bed - no thick piping to distinguish it. Just trying to

Hi Betty, The Scotts Tower is a level 7 and the Reisling is a level 4. The difference is the up-graded edge support and the level 7 is thicker. A euro-pillowtop is a thicker pillowtop than a pillowtop without the eruo in front of it. (Ever see the "Who's On First" skit?) A euotop doesn't have the pillow part, but looks like there is an addition section atop the mattress...flat along the sides. The Monmouth Court is in the same collection as the Scott's Tower and is the same as the Reisling. The Le Port is the same as the Scott's Tower.

Good evening.  I posted a question on your blog at pennlive.com earlier
today.  Thanks for your reply.
*As you suggested*, I'm in the process of trying to find the "level" of the
Wisconsin and McLean mattresses that I found here at my local Mattress
Warehouse in the No. VA/DC area.  The Wisconsin is categorized as a "Plush
Euro Pillowtop" and the McLean is categorized as an "Ultra Plush".  You
pointed out that the specific names may be regional.  However, I do find
similar S&F categories on your website, i.e., "Plush Euro Pillowtop" and
"Ultra Plush".  Accordingly, it appears that the equivalent of the Wisconsin
is your Etoile and the equivalent of the McLean is your Julianne.  Would it
be safe to say that the Etoile and Julianne will have the same feel and
build specifications/quality as the Wisconsin and McLean, respectively?
Also, you have "levels" of 1-13 assigned to your S&F beds.  Is this scale
describing a level of comfort or a level or firmness?
I'm glad to see and appreciate the fact that every set sold through
CCMattress is "factory fresh" and ordered as needed.  Do you know if one of
your competitors, USMattress.com, operates in the same fashion?

   I can't speak for other stores. So often, they say one thing and do another.
The levels are levels of expense, with 13 being the most expensive. There is usually a choice of comfort at each level. the Etoile and Julianne are level 2.
Since the names you mention are not on any of my lists, I don't know for sure that they are the same...but the assumption is reasonable.

A mattress to hold 500 pounds

My wife and I (recently married) are looking to buy our first bed together.  We have both decided that a firm bed is the choice and have been comparing the Simmons Beautyrest to the Serta Perfect Sleeper.  We are in the market for a mid-range price.  After looking over your sight, I wonder if we've been steered in the wrong direction.  To top that off, our combined weight (my fault, not hers) probably puts us around 500 lbs.  Any advice that you could provide would be appreciated before we make our first major purchase together.

Hi Burton, Latex will do the best job of supporting your weight. The Sealy SpringFree Weybridge is the firm model in that line. For an innerspring, the firm Stearns & Foster models will hold up better than the ones you're considering now.

Going from a plush full to a queen pillowtop mattress

Hello Adriana, The Adam's Farm isn't too plush, but you have to keep in mind that any plush mattress will develop body impressions to a greater degree than a firmer one will. Remember to rotate the mattress every month for the first year.

Can't find the S&F, Stearns & Foster Reisling mattress anywhere

Hi Peter!  It's Susan writing back again.  I appreciated your response. I tried diligently to find a level 4 cushion firm pillowtop from S & F to try in my part of the country but have been roundly stumped by the local dealers. I called every chain and independent store within a 50 mile radius as identified by the S & F website, and couldn't find even one (and I gave the salesfolks the full info). The best I got was a non-answer from Sears. They were basically uninformed about the products and non-specific. Sears carries their own versions: S & F Rhone Cushion Firm and Delinda Plush Euro Pillowtop (also the Grenoble Firm and the Roseau Plush), but I couldn't figure out if either the Rhone or the Delinda was similar to the Riesling (they don't list the thickness of the components on their literature, making it difficult to compare). 
Our local Macy's no longer stocks the Las Palmas, which should have been comparable to the Riesling. They list various types of Bellesguard, Casa Vincens, various Dali, Palencia, Flamenco, Meribel, La Siesta, Silver Dream and Golden Elegance.  Do you know if any of the Sears or Macy's mattresses are comparable to the Riesling? 
I again appreciate your incomparable knowledge, assistance and willingness to demystify mattress shopping!

Hi Susan, The Reisling is a rather unique mattress, compared to the other S&F models. Sears doesn't carry anything above a level 3. The Dali cf is a level 6 and is a little firmer. The other names the Reisling is known by are:
Queensland, Murrieta, Isla Troia (however that's pronounced at Ashley Furniture), Monmouth Court (Levitz's), Flatiron (Bloomingdale's), Niota (Great Indoors) and East Hills.
I can't imagine why it's so hard to find...it has such a great feel for those who need a firmer mattress.
