I have chronic neck pain and a bulging disc in my lower back. I have a serta inner spring mattress with a pillow top of memory foam. The bed is 4 yrs old. I hate it. Have had problems from early on. My shoulder hurts and arms and hands fall asleep. I'm a side sleeper. 5'8" 140-145 lbs. I have a true hourglass figure & it feels my back is breaking and hips hurt. My fiance is 6'4" 245 so his movement can easily wake me.
Looked at tempurpedic, but at $3,000 I want to make sure. I need something that can support my curves without creating painful pressure points. I must sleep with a pillow between my knees as well.
The Tempurpedic is memory foam. It's a cinch that you can't expect a different result with the same material that's in the mattress you have now. Here's a link to the Q&A posts about memory foam. It will open your eyes, change your mind, and save you from throwing away $3000. http://mattressexpert.typepad.com/the_mattress_expert/memory_foam/
With all the hype and BS that swirls about in an effort to pluck money from your wallet, it's more useful to you to stick with the basics.
A mattress needs to be firm to support your spine and muscles. It also has to have enough surface comfort to contour and relieve pressure points. Lots of mattresses do this, but few do it for long...like your Serta.
Your challenges are your hour glass figure, with the area under your hip being the first part of the mattress to wear on your side of the bed...and your husband's size. While not heavy for a man his height, it's still 245 lbs that needs to be supported.
The padding on top of mattresses are: memory foam and poly foam, for the most part. The most resilient of the foams is latex.
Latex is rubber and has always been the best material available. It then makes sense to add a layer of soft latex to a firmer mattress for the best long term result for both, support and comfort.
Since you have $3000 to spend, you can afford the best of these combination sleep systems...and have a nice sum left over.
Here is a link to the Simmons Beautyrest Black Ansleigh luxury firm mattress, which uses a triple strand wire in half of the coils. This "cable" coil is the strongest among one sided mattresses.
Also, a link to the latex toppers. You'll want the "soft" choice for the extra comfort, which will suit your shape.
The topper will absorb your husband's body weight, which will add years of extra life to the mattress...and make for a long lasting and comfortable sleeping surface, without negating the underlying firm support.
