I have read that the Simmons Beautyrest Adamsville Plush/Firm mattress is no
longer available as of April 1st & that the Lumberton Luxury replaced it. My question
is, is this model safe for my toddler? Does it have memory foam or harsh chemicals
that could be harmful?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Hi Michelle,
That's a very good question. The answer isn't as clear as the no memory foam in
the Adamsville.
3 or 4 years ago, Simmons came out with what they called, Next Generation (NxG)
memory foam. Up until now, it was only used in their high end beds.
NxG foam, from the start, never got the list of complaints that regular memory foam
got. It's used in their Comforpedic, TruEnergy and Black models. My wife and I sleep
on a Black model.
Being more expensive to make, it wasn't used in their lower end lines.
All of their lower end models had some amount of the regular memory foam. Not only
does that stuff create a myriad of respiratory problems, it wears out quickly. The
Adamsville from prior to April 1st, had no memory foam, which was why we recommended
it so strongly. The bed, otherwise, was also the perfect choice for a child to grow up
on...the individually pocketed coils provide a contouring support that will maintain the
natural alignment of the spine and continually adjust to a child's growing body, providing
excellent support throughout their growing years.
Since April 1st, the new line contains a little of their NxG memory foam and none of the
regular memory foam.
Reports of respiratory issues arising from regular memory foam are well documented.
Conversely, there are no such complaints from using the NxG memory foam. NxG is also
far less temperature sensitive and longer lasting than regular memory foam.
Unlike regular memory foam, there is no data to indicate that NxG is dangerous....no
laundry list of complaints. Is it 100% safe? Considering that it is not a natural product,
it would be foolish to think so. Polyurethane foam is a petro-chemical based product and
used throughout the home...mattresses, seat cushions and carpet padding, for instance.
To the great majority of us, it is seemingly harmless. Over the 40+ years it's been in use,
I've encountered 2 people who were intolerant of it.
As for the new line of Beautyrests, there's no obvious reason to worry about the NxG, as
there is with regular memory foam.
Given the quality of the bed, the support and comfort it provides to a growing body and
the lack of and problems thus far, along with being the right price for a child's bed, the
Lumberton in the luxury firm is my top pick as choice for a child and guest room mattress.

Thanks, Pete
