Hi Peter, I must give the biggest shout out to you and your company. I
e-mailed you several times three years or so ago, and you always replied
with excellent information. We ended up purchasing a bed from you and it
was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Every night is heaven in
my bed.In fact, it has made vacation difficult because nothing beats the
bed you recommended for me and my husband. We ended up with a Stearns
and Foster Plush Lucas Park and can never thank you enough. 
From your advice, through the ordering and delivery process, everything went
smoothly and I couldn't be happier with the buying experience. That said,
now the time has come for our daughter to get a bed. She is just turning
three years old and is very tall. She outgrew her toddler bed already! I
am not sure what type of mattress to go with. I was thinking either
Sealy or Stearns and Foster, but am not sure. Do you have any
recommendations for a mattress that will last as she continues to grow?

Thank you Heather, I couldn't be more pleased to hear that.
If staying with S&F, which is a whole lot better than the Posturepedics, I'd suggest the 
less expensive Heidi in luxury Plush. It's more than enough mattress to see her through
the rest of her childhood and well into her college years.
It is more mattress than what is normally purchased of a three year old.

Where can I find a bungie board?

It's called a bunkie board, which should make it easier to locate. The first place to look is at place that has children's (juvenile) furniture....bunk beds and such.

Stearns & Foster mattress suitable for children AND adults

Which mattress is best for my 24month old children to sleep on and be comfortable, give them a nice posture and can be used for a lifetime, and can be used by adults-guest when we have a full  also need the mattress not to heat up. kindly compare to a tempur -pedic mattress. thank u. have a great day

 

Hi,
You can forget about "lifetime" use from any mattress.
If you don't want to sleep warm, you'll want to avoid memory foam all together, which is what the Tempurpedic is made of. If you don't want hot, you don't want a Tempurpedic. Also, there is dangerous chemical off gassing from memory foam...something you would not want to subject anyone to...especially your child.
There are lots of good choices for children, but if being used by adults too, look at the Stearns & Foster Blisswood. The individually pocketed coil system maintains your body's natural alignment and is an excellent choice for a child to grow up on. The Blisswood, specifically, will last a long time and hold up to the weight of adults.

Stephanie - First big beds for 2 boys

We have two boys ages three and five and we have just started the search for their first big boy beds. We found a Serta perfect sleeper firm plush on close out for $600 for 2 twin sets. I have concerns about the long term durability even though there is a ten year warranty. I have read through some of the posts here and it looks like your top pick is the Sealy Reserve cushion firm, but for $1,000 plus for two twin sets it's nearly double the price. Is there really that big a difference? Thanks for sharing your expertise.

There are a couple of things to consider. First, they're boys....and boys are rougher on stuff than girls...usually.
And while I don't much care for the over-all quality of the Serta Perfect Sleeper, their low end models use a much heavier gauge wire than their more expensive models.
And while the Sealy Posturepedic Reserve is a better quality mattress, you seem to have gotten a very good price on those Sertas.

Sealy mattress for a child

Hi Carol,
It depends on the child. The Hope Mills is a Reserve Series level 7...perfect for a child's room. It'll last awhile, so you have to plan for them as larger people. The plush is a good choice for a girl. When she gets older, her body shape will change and that plushness will be good for her hips. The cushion firm is a better choice for a boy. They don't have the same needs. The hips aren't an issue, but they will tend to be bigger, heavier and rougher.
The firmer padding of the cushion firm helps with all of that.
We have it as the Wysteria Lane. For a short time, we can get you the level 9 Reserve for the same price. Everything inside is the same as the level 7, but an inch more padding. It's not such a great value when you have to pay more for it. But at the same price, it's a no brainer.

Hi Michael. I don't know abot the Kelton Place, but the other three are all the Reserve 7. We have it as the Powells Point. The cushion firm is a good choice....firm without being too hard. Crib mattresses are pretty stiff, so you don't want to go too soft.

Our son is turning 2 and looks like he might be ready to move from the crib to a bed. We'd like to skip the toddler beds and go straight to a twin bed. What kind of mattress is good for a child? Hi Mark. I think, if a 2 year old is showing a talent for something, you should go with it. You should enroll him in one of the WWF pre-school programs that Governor Ventura proposed. It's designed to harness all the negative energy and destructive tendency for violence, that is so prevailent in America's 2 year olds, and channel it in a positive manner.
Or, a Sealy Posturepedic Reserve in a firm...a water proof mattress pad....and a steel cage.

Mattresses for my sons

I need a full mattress for my youngest but I could also give the new one to my older son and give the baby his old mattress. Would you choose a Posturpedic in the Reserve series that is a plush model or would you choose a Posturpedic in the Preferred Series that is cushion firm. I don't care about the money so much as I want the best mattress for my son. I am concerned though because your blogs tend to recommend only the Preferred Series and only in cushion firm. Hi Tracy. You seem to have it backwards. You'll see me recommending the Reserve over the Preferred because the Reserve has the higher coil count and better edge support. You will also see me recommending the cushion firm over the plush for boys...as they are usually rougher on things and tend to weigh more as they grow. The Reserve is available in a cushion firm. The Reserve over the Preferred, because you are much less likely to have to replace it before they're grown. Paying the little extra now is far less expensive than having to buy new in several years.

Mattress for my 2 year old Daughter

We are going to be switching our daughter from her crib into a bed shortly. We can use the crib for a head/foot board for a new full bed. We went to the store today and they gave us a good deal on a Kingsdown Sleeping Beauty Embrace with the box spring, and bed frame. It seemed like the better choice of some of the ones we looked at. I want the mattress to last a long time. Did we make a good choice or should we change what we ordered? I only put down a deposit and he said we could always make a change since we're not getting delivery until late September. What do you think?

Hi Paul. At the weight of a 2 year old, it doesn't much matter....but she isn't going to stay 2.
There are a couple of things you should research...customer satisfaction on that brand and that store. "Getting a good deal", is what you think you get from a store that first inflates their prices. You had to have been "sold" that bed. You certainly didn't go into the store looking for that brand.

12 year old daughter has been sleeping on an old mattress

I've been devouring the info on your site for days now. Cannot thank you enough for providing this service.
We have a 12 year old daughter and she has been sleeping on an old mattress for years. She is recently complaining about it every night and I admit, it does feel terrible. I'm guilty of letting her sleep on it for so long.
We've been searching for a new mattress for weeks, and I've just about settled on the Sealy Springfree Series. I have several questions within this email and I hope you can bear with me. I'm going crazy and want to get this decision over with so she can sleep good again.
What would be a good choice for her in this series? She is a tall girl and weighs about 120 pounds and growing. She will use this mattress from age 12 until she leaves for college.
I continue to be stymied in making a purchase by my fear of chemicals/PBDE's. I know it's federally regulated and in many area of our homes, but to me, we spend so many hours of our lives sleeping and in close contact with these chemicals that it's scary. I'd like to at least REDUCE this risk as much as possible. There are organic websites claiming to sell no chemical mattresses. Can this be true? The Springfree lines claims to at least not use the chemicals on the outside of the mattress (if I understand correctly), but they are still in the mattress itself.
Can a thick mattress pad made of anything in particular at least help to "insulate" from these chemicals - or do they leech through regardless. What is your feeling re the Springfree line with regard to chemicals - any less than any other mattresses? What would be a good choice for us if chemicals are a concern . . . is there a "lesser" of the evils available out there??

Hi Karen. I think you're worrying for nothing. The fire retardent chenicals used in the Polyurethane have been there since the early 1970s. If you were sensitive to them, you'd know that by now. You could get a plastic sipper on cover for the mattress. That would certainly do the job of creating an effective parrier, but it will also make it hot to sleep on. The River Crest model from the Sealy SpringFree model is the one to get. It's the favorite among woen, as it gives better at the hip. If you were to take her out to try them, she'd undoubtedly prefer the top of the line, Brighton Hill. I'm always amazed at what expensive taste, 12 year old girls have.
