the S&F Latex line, and am curious when you would buy one with, or

Hi James,
The S&F latex line has no coils. There are coiled units in their regular line that have some latex, but that is a completely different thing. 
An all latex mattress has always been the best mattresses available.

Linda - Coils popping in my Spring Air Mattress

I recently found your site, and am very appreciative of the advice you
give concerning mattress selection. I recently purchased a Spring Air
mattress, less than 6 months ago. About a month and a half ago, I heard
a couple of the springs inside "pop", and now there is a noticeable
divet in the mattress toward one side. I know this should not be "normal
wear and tear". I have tried turning the "no flip" mattress, according
to the suggestions made by the company, but am experiencing severe lower
back, shoulder, and hip pain. Needless to say, I am not satisfied. I
have been looking at the Sealy Posturepedic Line of mattresses. I am a
thin person, body weight approx. 130lbs./ 5 ft. 8in. I do suffer from
lower back and hip pain from time to time, that started when my old
mattress became completely worn after almost 15 years(and I purchased
the Spring Air).What suggestions do you have for a Sealy Posturepedic
that would be good for my back and lower hips, not too expensive, and is
designed with "breathable" materials that won't increase my body heat.
Also, I noticed, trying a personal experiment-sleeping on this mattress
with no bedding, it seemed as if the mattress was absorbent of my
natural body oils. Even with bed sheets, the effect is the same, as if
the mattress materials are absorbant, and I wake up physically parched
(skin and body). In addition, do you have any suggestions for possible
recourse concerning the issues with my Spring Air? Thank you.
 
Hi Linda,
Coils going "POP" in the mattress is a sure sign of a defect. You should call your retailer and register the complaint. Most likely, they will send an inspector to check it out. Once thay have authorization to exchange it, you should be able to select whatever you want. Of course, there may be a price difference. But it's certainly better than buying outright.

Hi Phil,
I have an uncle Phil. My mother calls him Peter and me, Phil...has been doing that for nearly 60 years. You'd think she'd have gotten us straight by now.
Big Cat, huh? You mean like a lion or a tiger? It wouldn't happen to be that incredibly fat cat I saw on TV a couple of weeks ago, would it?
Anyway, you couldn't make a worse choice for your needs....starting with a plush pillowtop as a no-no for larger people.
That model is the N grade, the same as our Graciela, the starting level in S&F's Estate Collection. It uses an inch of memory foam, which also won't hold up well under heavier people. The Estate coil system uses a dual coil in fewer pockets and with a thinner gauge wire than the less expensive Luxury Collection.
The Estate models are build for greater comfort and conformability. If you're average weight or lighter, that's fine. But, the Lower priced Luxury Collection models have a stronger coil unit, and are a better choice for heavier people.
In the Estate Collection, the P level, Twila is your best choice, which has latex instead of memory foam....aka Michaela in the store that had the Shantel and April at Macy's
A favorite choice for heavier people is the Heidi in luxury firm for support and a 2" soft latex topper for comfort and extended longevity.

Hi Linc,

The Jacalyn is the Graciela, which is a level N Estate model. The Heidi is a level H from the Luxury Collection. 
The level N level Graciela has a layer of memory foam...a 1" layer just above the coils.
The H level Heidi has no memory foam.
Each uses an individually pocketed coil system. There are more pockets in the Heidi with a single coil in each pocket.
The Estate models use a dual coil , made from thinner wire...designed to be more comfortable, but not more durable.

John - Difference between Stearns & Foster pocketed coil & Intellicoil

 Can you tell me the difference between S&F individual pocketed coil and the intellicoil? One is more money is it worth the price?

 

Hi John,
All of the S&F models use an individually pocketed coil system. The Luxury Collection models use a single coil in each pocket. The Estate Collection models use a dual coil...a coil within a coil, called and Intellicoil.
The Intellicoil has an outer and inner coil...all made from the same wire. The outer coil is taller and gives more easily. When it catches up to the inner coil, the two togther provide excellent support. The Intellicoil was designed to be both, more supportive and more comfortable than the single coil used in the Luxury Collection. When trying them, focus on how your body is feeling and let it tell you if it's worth the difference in price.
In terms of longevity, one is as good as the other. In the Luxury Collection, there are more pockets and the single coils are made of a heavier gauge steel.

Brenda - Stearns & Foster All Latex Mattress

Shopping for a mattress and having a difficult time. Over the last 4-5 yrs we have bought the following mattresses and been unhappy:

1. Simmons Beauty Rest Bancroft (World Class) Firm (RC Wiley) -- too firm caused backaches
2. Traded in for Simmons Beauty Rest Bancroft Plush and it developed deep indents where hips were - over 2' so RC Wiley replaced.
 3. Marquis Torino Plush (latex mattress - RC Wiley) - also indented in a matter of months, replaced by RC Wiley.
 4. Vera Wang Beyond Radiance (also latex mattress frm RC Wiley).
 
 All the above were Cal King mattresses and all have been unsuitable - most breaking down. The latest Vera Wang is 2 yrs old and is deeply indented where husband sleeps (225 lbs). We both have numbness in both arms and back aches from mattress.
 
 Now to shopping for guest rm: Bought a Select Comfort I10 (top of the line) Number Bed Queen Size. The backaches are instant and wake up feeling bruises and battered every 10 min. The lower nrs. cause the backaches - the higher numbers the bruise and battered feeling and again, numbness. 
 
 We are in process of returning but have no idea where to go from here. Can you help?

You were on the right track initially. Could have gotten a topper to soften the surface of that. In the Simmons line, going to a "plush" means more than just a softer top, but also, a much thinner gauge wire for the coils...resulting in what happened to that. There are lots of latex mattresses out there that have very little latex in them. I don't know anythging about the Marquis Torino, but can promise you that the Vera Wang uses a polyurethane foam core....likely for the other too. 
My wife and I have been sleeping on latex for years...nice sized people, she and I...but we are talking about an all latex mattress.
Today, I'd have you look at any of the Stearns & Foster models you can find without a pillowtop....and you can't go wrong.

Jennie - Replacement for a Dormia Mattress

5 years ago we purchased a king size Dormia mattress, which has now deteriorated to having a large hump in the middle (but not the 2.5 inches needed in order to trigger our warranty). Have been toying with getting a sleep number bed due to my hip bursitis, which can get painful at night, but don't like all the complaints of leaking air, not to mention the mold. Most mattress salespeople have no clue what they are actually selling and I was impressed with your site and knowledge. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated! Thanks.

The industry standard for determining when a body impression is deep enough to be considered a sag, is 1.5", not 2.5"...something you'll find with off brands that have warranties that are longer than what is standard. Useless, really. 
It helps to buy a good mattress...not just one that the salesman tells you is good or one that simply feels good at the moment...but one that will remain feeling good for a decent amount of time.
The key to sleeping without pain is alignment...the natural alignment for your spine and the alignment of your head and neck with your spine. I mention them separately because they are dealt with separately. The mattress for your body and a pillow for your head and neck.
Air mattresses rely on displacement for support, which ends up feeling more like a hammock. This will not keep you properly aligned. The best are those with individually pocketed coils, which provide an independent suspension type of support. The best of these are: the Simmons" Beautyrest Black line http://www.themattressexpert.com/Simmons/ and the Stearns & Foster line http://www.themattressexpert.com/Stearns-and-Foster-3749/ ....being careful to avoid the pillowtop models, as they tend to lose their shape quicker....regardless of how well the mattress is made.
Making your way through a mattress store to find the non-pillowtop models, aka "tight tops", is like making your way through a mine field. The showroom floor is covered with them...not because they're better, but because they're easier to sell. They are all seductively comfy...purposefully to get you back into the mattress buying market sooner than later. So, avoid them.
Another good thing to avoid is memory foam. It too, loses its shape more quickly while providing good initial comfort.

Which mattress is better?

They are both an individually pocketed coil unit. The S&F uses 651 (queen count), double coil...a coil within a coil. The Simmons uses an 880 coil unit with every other row being a cable coil. The cable coil is three strands of wire wrapped around each other.
The steel for the S&F coils, is double tempered, once oven/oncew electrically. The steel for the Simmons coils is not tempered, but a higher carbon steel.
The Black Series, is Simmons' strongest unit. The Estate Collection is S&F's strongest unit.
I doubt if you could go wrong either way. It'll come down to personal comfort.
The only thing I would caution you against, is getting a pillowtop. The tigh tops keep there shape better.

Simmons World Class Rozelle mattress

My wife and I have slept on a foam and water waterbed for the last 15 years. It has sprung a leak and we have to get a new mattress. She is around 120 lbs and likes the soft feel of the waterbed. I am around 175 lbs, and while I like the soft feel of the waterbed, I have a bad lower back and need some support. I have a chance to buy a New Simmons King Size World Class Rozelle Mattress at a fairly good discount. I have read that this mattress has a soft feel, but also offers some support. Would this mattress be a good balance?
 
Hi Lon. Each of the Simmons models is available with a thinner coil and a heavier one. I suggest yours, has the heavier coil. Even so, that heavier coil is available with a plush top. It's designated as a plush/firm.
