I have been reading your advice blog at www.themattressexpert.com and found it to be extremely helpful in untangling my brain.
We are looking for a king size mattress for our platform bed. Fortunately, my wife and I are both side/back sleepers, so agreeing on the firmness of a mattress is usually not a problem. We usually agree on the plush firm comfort level.
My wife and I have been “test driving” various mattresses for a few weeks now, and the one we keep going back to is the Simmons Black Brooklyn (plush firm pillow top).
We've also looked at many of the full memory foam mattresses and have decided that the innerspring style is what we want to buy.
I have a few questions and/or comments regarding a new mattress my wife and I are looking for:
1. I have read a lot of negative comments about “pillow top” mattresses, mainly the pillow top quickly loosing it’s shape and being lumpy and/or developing low spots. Is a pillow top mattress something we should avoid, or are the newer pillow tops on the market better quality and do not have the problems that the older ones had? We've never had a pillow top mattress so we don't have any experience with this at all.
2. Are the mattresses that have a gel foam layer really worth the extra money, or is this just the latest fad in the mattress industry? I’m a hot sleeper, so if this is something I’ll actually see a benefit from I’m willing to explore it.
3. The one Simmons model we keep coming back to is the Black Brooklyn (plush firm pillow top). We are a little hesitant to spend that much money ($2,050 is our best delivered price), so we are considering a Simmons mattress from their Elite line as well comparable models from Sealy, Serta, and Stearns and Foster.
a. What are the main differences between the Black and Elite models?
b. Is the Elite model line a good value for the price?
c. We have found an Elite model called “Radiance Road” (plush firm Summit Top) that seems to have the comfort level we are looking for. What are the comparable Elite models on your website?
d. Why are there so many Elite models with the same firmness level shown on your website?
e. Which mattresses from Sealy, Serta, and Stearns and Foster would be a comparable model to the Simmons Black Brooklyn?
f. Which mattresses from Sealy, Serta, and Stearns and Foster would be a comparable model to the Simmons Elite (plush firm)?
The problem with pillowtops is not brand specific. They aren't better on one mattress than another. Their problem of quickly losing their shape is the pillowtop, itself....the padding not anchored tightly to the edge of the mattress.
The Black line stands alone, as the strongest coil unit of any name brand. The three strand "Cable" coil is why....which does not exisit in the Elite Series.
When buying any Simmons, it's imperative that you consider the plush/firm as the softest you should get. The "plush" models use a much thinner gauge wire, which doesn't hold up very well.
The Elite models in plush/firm are excellent value. The price difference between them and the Black models is substantial.
Our website offers you everything that Simmons makes...unlike shopping at stores with limited floor space that show only the few to several models that they have chosen to display.
The best buys in the Stearns & Foster line are the Luxury Firm models.
Since Sealy changed their line in June 2011, they have fallen out of the "best buy" catagory, as they chose to cheapen the over-all quality from what it had been in previous years.
Serta has always made a thrid rate product.
Here are links to the models that I consider as "best value"....in the price range you're considering.
