I have neck & shoulder problems, as well as getting hot on & off through the night. I was considering buying the Sealy Natural Energy Ultra Plus Euro Pillowtop (floor model), but hear that pillowtops have a tendency to sink in after time. Should I look at a latex mattress because I run hot sometimes? Should I avoid a pillowtop because of my shoulder? FYI, even though I have some shoulder pain I do sleep on my shoulders and need to consider the best option. And should I consider a special pillow because of my shoulder issue? I'm looking at Sealy products and don't know where to begin! Thanks, karen
Hi Karen,
Reminds me of the old vaudeville skit...that spilled over to the early days of TV...not that I'm old enough to remember vaudeville...just the early days of TV.
Patient, "Doctor! It hurts when I do this".
Doctor, "Don't do that".
If you have shoulder pain, try to find a position that's comfortable, while putting less pressure on your shoulder. There's no question that you can get a mattress that will either ease or aggravate the condition. But too, help yourself by altering your position...even a little. The body has amazing self healing powers, if you let it do its thing.
Premature wear isn't the only reason to avoid pillowtops. They sleep warm. You are more engulfed by the padding...more in the bed than on it. The more surrounded by the padding you are, the warmer you're going to feel.
Latex does not sleep hot. I have a latex mattress at home...and a latex topper added to it for extra comfort. As a 58 year old who has spent way too much time behind a desk for way too many years, I have every ache and pain that goes with it. My mattress doesn't add to my discomfort. I always feel better upon rising than when I went to sleep. I have a bone spur in my left shoulder. When I sleep on that side, my shoulder hurts....not the fault of the mattress.
An all latex mattress is an excellent choice, but certainly not cheap. We have some on our Stearns & Foster page and one that is very comfy on our two-sided mattress page.
If staying with a conventional mattress, better to go with Simmons or Stearns & Foster, which use an individually pocketed coil system. The contouring support is considered to be more comfortable by most. The more rigid support of the interlocked coil, as used in the Sealy Posturepedic can be very good for some back issues, but creates more in the way of pressure points problems.
Your neck will feel better when you keep it, and your head, aligned with your spine...just as they are when you're standing upright. You'll discover that finding the right pillow, or combination of pillows, to be a more daunting task than buying a mattress.
It occured to me, while traveling across country, that if I had with me, one of the pillows from home that I didn't like, I could switch it with one of the pillows from the hotel, that I did like. But of course, I didn't have one with me and I certainly wouldn't suggest doing that...wink wink.
Thanks, Pete
