Spring Air warranty problems

hello i bought a matress from jcpennys and it is a springair they changed it severally and the one they brought last was the worst. a technician came and took in a report that the matress was faulty they brought me one that was about 4 inches thinner from the original am still with the faulty matress ,jcpennys have refused me a refund and they insist i accept the mattress thats 4 inches thinner or i do a reselection at my own cost do i have any recourse?

Hi Esther. You could appeal directly to the consumer service department of the manufacturer, directly. The white tag on the back of the mattress will tell you where they are.

Finding a comfortable mattress

My husband I purchased the Sealy Sunset Heights Pillow-Top mattress. The first night of sleeping went okay, however, by the end of the week, the mattress started sagging. We called customer service and they said perhaps the mattress had a defect in it and they sent another one. Within days, the 2nd mattress did the same thing. Then, they said perhaps it was a defect in the box spring and they sent a new set; within days the same thing happened.  Finally, we were told perhaps we needed a firmer mattress. So, we picked out the Beauty Simmons Rest "Bianca"; it's hard as a brick and it's too low. And my back hurt me all night. Can you provide any advice for comfort. Thank you.

Hi Debra. If all you needed was a firmer mattress, why did you switch brands? The coils in the Beautyrest aren't tempered. The Posturepedic coils are double tempered. Didn't your salesperson mention anything about that? It seems like you're dealing with people who don't know what they're doing.  You started off with a too soft pillowtop and then to a brick hard mattress. It's bad enough when an uneducated consumer makes that mistake, but there's no excuse for a "mattress professional"....unless of course, that the only professionalism is in their salesmanship and not in their products. You're dealing with an organization that specializes in BS. You're going to have to rely on common sense. You need something less plush than what you had and softer than what you have. Other than that, you've included no personal information that would lead me to draw you to any specific recommendation.

A mattress for scoliosis

I am a 5'8" female, 160 lbs and I have scoliosis. I've been sleeping on a very old mattress for a long time, and as a result I've been in pretty severe distress these days as far as my hip pain, lower back and neck are concerned. I read another woman's questions in this column, and she had scoliosis as well. It sounds like I might do well with a Stearns and Foster, perhaps one of your less expensive models (I'm somewhat limited in finances), but I really want to pay enough to get something that will improve my sleep and back pain substantially...it's about time. What would you recommend?I also would like your opinion about my perhaps getting a platform bed and just buying a mattress, or if it is more adviseable in my situation to get a matching mattress set?I also own about a 1 inch thick tempurpedic mattress topper. Would this be something I could use in combination with one of your suggestions? Really, I don't care. I just want the best thing that will give me a good night's sleep.Thanks for your excellent website here, it's been very educational for me!

Hi Suzon- Go with the Stearns & Foster Caravelle, (level 2 firm). Add your topper to it. When that one wears out, get a 2" soft latex topper for it. It's cheaper to get the matching boxspring, than a platform bed....since finance is a factor. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

Mattress at the Marriott Hotel

Hi David. Mattresses for hotels are made to specification by the contract division of the manufacturer.  The exact specifications are not likely to be available. The Marriott has been using foam mattresses for sometime. Hotels change their mattresses every few years, and so, don't spend much on mattresses. The best of the foams is latex....most durable, and so, the best choice for extended home use. There are lots to choose from, but because they're easy to shop, the Sealy SpringFree line is the best value. And since the higher end models in the line won't last any longer, the starting model, the Beachside, is the best buy on the market. It has the medium feel that most people sleep best on.

A mattress for our young daughter

To me, there seems to be too many choices and it seems as if different stores carry different brands (i.e. Sealy bed is called X in one store and Y in another although they are the same bed). Hi Michael. Model names are different at almost every store. For a small child, the Sealy Posturepedic Reserve Series level 7 is a good choice. We have that as the Dante Park. You may also consider the Stearns & Foster level 1 plush. We have that as the Chateau Orleans.

Sealy Reflexion plush latex mattress

Hello, I have a 4.5 year old Sealy Reflextion Plush Top (can't remember the model name). I love it...period! However, I've recently married and need to upgrade to a King (I'm the light sleeper..need more space). Anyway, it looks like the Reflexion line as become the Springfree line. Are these still EXACTLY the same construction? In my area, I have a choice between the Sealy Spring free plush top (insert model name here...they change as you know) or I can choose the Stearns and Foster latex plush top....Either one for pretty much the same price. Is one better than the other? The dealer of the S&F says the cover of the SF is better quality than the Springfree? Any thoughts? Thank you again.

Hi Ivan. Except for the cover and label, they are the same. We have it as the Sealy SpringFree Beachside....which is the current replacement for what you have now. While a little different, it's very much the same.

Sealy Posturepedic Holly Springs mattress

Hi, I'm a 22 year old college student and I'm moving out of the dorms and into my own apartment next week. I went furniture shopping this week and got a lot of stuff, including a queen sized bed frame, but finding the right mattress has been really tough!! I'm 5'9", 240 lbs, and a back sleeper. I normally run the a/c pretty cool at night to keep myself from getting to hot in bed. From the mattresses I've been testing out, I seem to like firm mattresses but with a soft top. I found a few foam & latex ones that I liked at Ikea, and at the local mattresses stores I found a Sealy Posturepedic Reserve Holly Springs that I liked a lot. I think my price cutoff is probably going to be $650 and the guy at Mattress Firm said he'd give me the Sealy for that much plus $20 shipping. Am I on the right track? Hi Chris. The most mattress for the least amount of money is the Sealy Posturepedic Reserve. Get the "firm" model and add a topper to it. Toppers not only make a mattress more comfortable, they also add to life of the mattress by absorbing some of your body weight.

A mattress topper

Hi Sharon. A firm latex topper would be best here. I would think that a 3" with an ILD rating in the 30s would be best.

Kingsdown Grafton mattress

We purchased a king size Kingsdown grafton euro top over a year ago, thinking it would be a firm mattress. We have been disappointed since we received it. The foam is really sagging and it really isn't a firm mattress. The representative confirmed there was a defect, and we are now looking for a new mattress. My husband is 250#, 6'3 and I am 110#, 5'5. Given our size difference, it is hard to find something we both feel comfortable on. Thinking we had to change our mattress for a Kingsdown, we tried the Grafton chiropratic and the Fusion III, but are affraid we will get the same problem. Any suggestions you have would be most welcomed. We also welcome suggestion of other brands.

Hi Julie. A latex mattress will hold your husbands weight and be comfortable. Latex is the most durable material. There are too mant differences between what's available in Canada and the US, to be able to be specific about models. It's a good bet that if you exchange it for the same thing, you'll end up with the same problem.

Simmons Lena River mattress

Peter, First of all I want to wish you a happy holiday and give you many thanks for keeping this blog up and running with honest information. Now down to the problem at hand. I paid $1500 for a Simmons Lena River Visco Plush Firm twin set and I feel that I paid too much! When all was said and done I pain $1717 for the mattress, box, frame and mattress protector. Not only do I feel that I paid too much, but Im sensitive to the visco in the mattress. I told the salesman repeadedlly that I was sensitive to the visco material like the temperpedic and all the memory foams. I get swollen throat, post nasal drip, red and sore eyes, vertigo with nervousness and turn pale. I also told him that I have fibromyalgia and chemical sensitivities. The reason that I went into this particular store in Connecticut is because they advertize a 30 day money back guarantee and they also had the Sealy Beachside model that you recommend. Well I did go into the store and tried the Sealy Beachside Latex. It ended up being too soft. The first salesman even muscle tested me and my arms dropped way down. He then refered me to another salesman and told him all of my problems. The next day I went back to his mattress store and he talked to me for 2 hours about everything under the sun except mattresses. Right when I went to go home and try and get some sleep he said "lets get you set up" and rung me up for this mattress. The next day when I went I reacted terrible to the visco toppers they had in the store and let him know. I even found the same mattress online for much cheaper. I tried to get him to admit that their prices were high because of their policy but he wouldnt admit to anything or budge on the price and wished me luck saying that he didnt think that memory foam would be a problem. Needless to say I was very nervous. When I finally got the mattress devlivered there was nothing but problems. The mattress only has 5/8" of visco in it but it is enough to cause all of those problems that I mentioned before. Even with the protector the smell seeped through and sickened me. I had to put the plastic that the mattress came on back on it to block the smell. Now my back is %60 better but I am sleeping on noisey uncomfortable plastic! Is this right? I feel like just returning the whole thing and getting something mid level from one of the popular mattress chains for 1/2 the price. I dont even want an exchange from this store as I feel that the salesman ignored my concerns for his commision despite their honesty policy. Am I being stupid here or should I just continue to sleep on the plastic? I dont feel that this is a rolls roice of beds and I could use the money to pay off other credit cards as I do not make much to begin with.   Thanks-for your continued support.

Hi Bob. You have a 30 day, money back guarantee. Now Bob, I can't advise you as to what to do about this. I will tell you that this is, or should be, a long term purchase. If you aren't happy with it, you'll be unhappy a long time. Personally, after not getting what I wanted and paying too much for it, I'd send it back and start over.
